I’ve heard people say that when a school matches a scholarship, it means the school will cover the rest of the cost. Other people say that the school will give you the same amount the scholarship you won gave you. So, what does matching a scholarship really mean?

“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.” And so it goes with such phrases as matching a scholarship.

However, my opinion is that what it usually means that the school will give you the same amount as the scholarship you won. That’s the way I have always seen it work when so described.

But that is for a full match. There can be partiial matches too. I can say that I’ll match an award , fifty cents on the dollar which is a half match.

Ok thanks for your help.

what schools do this ?

UMD and GW match the national horatio alger scholarship. I don’t know about any other schools that match scholarships.
