I can’t decide where to go for college. The more I think about it, the more I get confused.

I don’t know whether to go to school in LA or stay local in the bay area.
I have a 1 year old son and everyone tells me it would be better to stay close to him, while in college. However, If I stay in San Fransisco, I feel as if I will be missing out on the quality of the schools elsewhere.

San Fransisco is a great city for college. I’ve been there and you get a good choice and great location… Also, with your son, it would be better I think if you stuck around in the Bay area.

The best option is to move your family to a location that is close to a college of your choice.
It’s not that hard. You get the benefits of a good education while also being close to your son to help whenever he has a problem or to take care of him when he need shelp.

If there is an ounce of wisdom in you, you’ll know whether the well-being of your child or vanity is more important. Quality of school is what you make of it, not what the name of a school can do for you. You show a child how much you’re committed to him, he’ll never forget it, and conversely.

Actually the answer is only obvious if you’re like 99.9% of everyone else. I could definitely argue the case for prestige > family. However, given the OP’s situation I’d agree with everyone else in the thread.

If it were a matter of staying near to your parents, I’d tell you not to limit yourself.

But this is a matter where you are the parent of a small child who you obviously must be there for, thus it looks like you’ve got two options: a) stay where you are now or b) move your family to be nearer to your college choice, and IMO choice A is the better one.

You will only have the next 4 years or so ONCE in this life. If you go away now your son will be five (at least) when you graduate. He’ll be talking, walking, reading, riding a bike. You may want to re-enter his life then and he’ll reject you, as he won’t know you from Adam’s housecat. Once you have started your career, where you got your degree won’t matter at all. But you will be your son’s parent all your - and his - life.

your son should definitely come first, so stick to the bay area. there are plenty of prestigious schools in the bay area, why go to LA? there’s berkeley, stanford, even san francisco state is decent. why do you need to head towards UCLA, USC, etc when there are perfectly good schools in the bay area?
