What is my scope of schools?

Hi everyone! I have a question regarding what you all think my scope of schools is for my grades and my situation. I I really don’t know too much about applying for colleges and what great schools look for, (I want to get into the best school I can) primarily because I really didn’t go to high school much and was mostly on homeschooling. I never met with a school guidance counselor once to talk about colleges and never took my SAT. Somehow I managed to graduate with I believe an 84 GPA and right after I graduated I had no idea what to do or where to go… So I applied to my local community college and my degree is an Associate in Arts/Science. I decided to try my hardest to get into the best school I can… I’ve been here for 2 years so far and have a 4.0 GPA and I am projected to graduate in Spring 2015.

I feel discouraged I won’t get into a great school because I never took my SAT and my lack of knowledge on getting into universities… to be honest I’ve just been busting my tail at this community college hoping a 4.0 GPA will get me into a great school.

What do you guys think? I know my major is going to be Computer Science and I want to get into the best school I can. I live in NY, and was wondering with my 4.0 could I get into Stony Brook University, NYU, or other top CS schools around the country? Or, am I just being naive and need more for my application/improvements as a student.

Do I have to take the SAT? Should I join maybe the computer club here at school? Take honors courses (I’m apart of Phi Theta Kappa due to my grades)?

Any info would be extremely helpful, you don’t even know!
Thank you.

With a 4.0 GPA from your community college, great essays, and great recs you CAN get into UT Austin for Computer Science, as long as you’re able to afford it (roughly 50k per year).
You should also apply to UIUC, University of Washington, Georgia Tech, and UWisconsin-Madison. All of these will be very expensive ($40k+ per year).
If none of them are affordable for you, go to SUNY.

edit: and YES, join your computer club and do everything honors. You especially want to show those colleges why you are a match for CS.
