<p>NHS is not a ripoff, but it doesn’t mean that much at the elite colleges. It is an actual organization intended to honor students with NHS chapters in participating high schools. Participation among high schools is pretty high. The problem is that there are no national standards as to who gets in and who doesn’t. In some schools, membership means something. In other schools, membership is just a popularity contest by your fellow students, or in some cases, by the faculty. Also, it isn’t very exclusive. For the elite colleges, everyone has it except for the people who don’t, and if you don’t have it, it doesn’t matter. If it is offered, take it. List it on your app. Being an NHS officer can help.</p>
