I apologize if this is a dumb question. My D wants to add an art supplement to her college applications, and I’ve read that when submitting a portfolio to schools, the schools like to see a student’s process. I think I understand what this means, but for clarification should my D show the stages she takes in creating a painting? For instance she likes to water color, so would she show her drawings, then take a picture of each stage as she progresses until she finalized her art piece? Sorry if I sound super ignorant…she is basically self taught, and I don’t think her high school art teacher is providing much help when it comes to her portfolio.
studentartguide dot com has an article on how to make an art portfolio which includes a pretty good explanation and some examples of showing “process” work.
Development work might include sketchbook or workbook pages that show:
In depth investigations into subject matter (sketches / photography and other visual documentation of first-hand sources)
Investigations into mediums, materials and techniques and technologies
Development of concepts, compositions or details
Written analysis alongside visual work and annotation discussing ideas behind your work
Evidence of links to the historical, contemporary and/or social context in which works have been made – i.e. connections to artists and real world issues
Annotated screen captures, contact sheets, and documentation of digital processes.
UGH…my full post didn’t show up!
Process work (usually from your sketch book) shows your thinking in how you decided to do THIS final product rather than all the variations on a theme you may have played with along the way.
It is not a step-by-step photo story of the creation of your art while you are actually making it. .
Caution!
Be very sure you give the college what they ASK for in the portfolio. Most schools do NOT want “process work” they want your BEST final product. They usually have a maximum of art pieces that can be submitted and guidelines on how that can be done.
Good luck!
Thank you so very much!! Wow. You’ve been incredibly helpful. I was way off base, so you’ve saved her a lot of time and energy. I’ll have her her read your answer as well as check out the website you mentioned-
