Hi,
I was just reading this on the internet, “As I know they check nearly everthing, education, holidays, girlfriends, clubs, social life, high school friends, mum and dad, teachers”.

I know they check criminal and credit checks and stuff like that, but do they really check out your family, your social life, and even past friends from high school? I want to be an IRS agent.

Ha, I’m not sure what you read but was that maybe some sarcasm? They do have background checks that are more in depth than normal but no, they do not go that in depth. They just want to make sure your access to personal information will not carry any risk.

“I want to be an IRS agent.”

Wow, interesting career aspiration. You should minor in Satanic Studies/Demonic Relations. =P

^Um, actually they do. The background check is typically conducted by a retired FBI agent and they DO interview your friends, neighbors, former spouses, etc. to gain information about your character, reputation and general mode of living. If there are skeletons in closet, they’ll find them.

Really? I was misinformed I guess. I knew family checks were done, but neighbors and friends? Wow, that’s pretty intense.

Edit: (from the IRS site)

*Pass a background check to ensure that you have not engaged in any conduct that would justify the suspension or disbarment of an attorney, CPA, or enrolled agent from practice before the IRS."

I only quickly found this for enrolled agents, but can’t imagine much changing for an agent. I don’t think you are correct about neighbors and friends. I have heard about those intense checks for the CIA and judicial positions only, not the IRS.

Well the problem is my dad just died a few months ago and I’m not talking to a few members of my family from problems that escalated while he was sick. I never want to see or talk to these family members again, I completely cut them off.

Are you positive the IRS is going to check friends, neighbors, family, ect? I have very good character, I have committed no crimes, and I’m very honest, but due to things out of my control, if the IRS wanted to talk to family and friends I will not want to seek a job with them.

But I worry about things, I really want to know if they check family and friends, you see I would be really embarassed because I wasn’t really popular in high school… And theres the family thing too…

I am sorry to hear about your family problems, even if they do check family and friends they are not checking to see if you were popular or if you are having family problems. They would be seeing if people you are related to or associated with are involved in anything sketchy.

Stop worrying so much! It sounds like you have many more important things on your plate than worrying about IRS background check.

“bcarvings, no they don’t check very personal things like that. It’s pretty absurd.”

I’m a sophmore in college. I just really need to know if they do these in-depth checks, I would really rather not apply, it would be really embarassing. Even though I would not be disqualified from family or friends, I would be really embarassed…

Uh, I’m not really sure what you want to hear? You say there is nothing wrong and we said there checks were not that in depth, but you said you’d rather not apply? Than don’t apply. I’m just confused now? Do we need to provide factual evidence that they don’t do these?

One person said they do require an intensive background check. I didn’t necessarily have to have a government source, I was kinda hoping for a retired IRS agent, or mabye someone in the field that knows for sure of the process…

Maybe a forum designed for College Students questions may not be the best place to get that information? I wouldn’t think that this would be information that would be allowed to just be shot off by retirees.

I thought mabye a students parent would paruse through this forum (there is a parents section). And mabye some students here tried 2 apply 2 the IRS.

Ok, well no I am not certain. But have a very good idea that they don’t. And like I said above, I think you could get better information from other sources.

“(there is a parents section)”

There is also a careers section. Perhaps start there?
