What is the basis for the OOS tuition waiver?

D has verbally committed to AU and has partial athletic scholarship. We are told that she also qualifies for the $5k Charter scholarship based on her GPA and ACT score (30). She is taking the SAT in Nov to try to at least get min necessary for Heritage Scholarship and the $10k annual scholarship. My question is whether anyone knows how an OOS tuition waiver can be achieved? I get a different answer from everyone I talk to at AU. Apparently everything was revamped this past year but it is still possible to get OOS if you $X amount is awarded in scholarship money of a specific amount (athletic money does not count toward this threshold). I’m completely confused and was hoping some may have some Insight.

Thanks and War Eagle!

Well, technically, any of the larger academic scholarships offer the tuition waiver – part of my D’s scholarship is basically detailed as a tuition waiver on her e-bill. A lot of state U’s that award OOS tuition scholarships describe (at least part of) their respective scholarship as a tuition waiver. As you mentioned, Auburn has restructured their scholarships (i.e cut them) and now the OOS Presidential scholarship and National Scholars scholarship offer what amounts to the OOS tuition waiver ($15,000 a year). The OOS student is responsible for paying the equivalent to regular in-state tuition – $7,296. Unfortunately, these scholarships used to cover the entire OOS fee, plus a larger technology fee, and travel stipend. Your daughter will need to have at least a 34 on her ACT & a 3.5 gpa to be considered for the full waiver. The scholarship used to be automatic; now it’s competitive and limited in the number actually awarded. The Natl. scholars award requires being National Merit Finalist – scholarship consists of the $15k per year, plus tech stipend, enrichment travel stipend, and a stipend for room on campus. The good news is that you can “stack” scholarships (your daughter’s athletic scholarship can be added to any academic scholarship). Your student can also apply for a departmental scholarship as well – every little bit helps! PM me and maybe I can answer any other questions, or point you in a direction that may offer additional insight.
