Some colleges require them for admissions, 2 or 3 subjects

Some kids demonstrate their best skills when tested on a specific subject area they’ve studied, rather than the SAT_Is which show analytic power outside of a specific learned subject

You can study for some SAT-II’s. FOr example, for US History, don’t even go into the test room unless you’ve really studied the material.

Others, if you have lots of experience using the skill in a class, for example the SAT-II Literature, you don’t have to know authors but you need to have experience analyzing works by various authors to handle the passage they’ll put in front of you.

So, it shows well for kids who “learned how to learn” from their h.s. courses.

THey test foreign language skills, whether learned in courses or from native speaking in the home. I’m told if you have a last name that sounds as if you come from the same language culture, that’s not impressive to get in the high 700’s. If you studied the language only in school, however, the high 700 foreign language score means much more.

There are some subjects in SAT-II that overlap with the AP course tests. So, if your school didn’t offer AP’s you have a way to show skills anyway. Hard to do, though, and without AP classes you’ll need to allow lots of time with the SAT-II practice books for self-study. Still, it’s an important way for kids to show subject matter mastery if their schools don’t offer many AP courses. Equity.

A lot of colleges require a few SAT II tests. While 800’s on SATII’s won’t help you test out of anything in college like AP tests do, they’re very important in the application process.
