What is the best gift for a college boy to get his college girlfriend of six months?

This is exactly why I suggested asking her friends lol

As i sit here reading this with my dd, she suggests that he not ask her friends because that is the first thing they will tell her…we all know how girls share everything. she would like jewelry, picnics, specials songs downloaded, a memorable concert, or a collection of her favorote Dvds. She would loveblove love to get a love letter…which is free! If they break up…so be it, shouldn’t concentrate on that when gift giving.

My son gave his girlfriend a silver necklace with a charm on it that was significant to her life (but not really his) for their six month anniversary. She loves it!

Praying, if they’re her real friends and he asks them not to tell, they won’t. They would rather let her be surprised.

My girls would love jewelry, scarves, books, iphone covers…heck D2’s BF just ordered pink golfballs for her and had them imprinted with a nickname. She thought that was the best!

My daughter still wears jewelry that was given to her in college by her high school boyfriend. It is a pair of pearl earrings …nothing to serious or obviously reminiscient of their puppy love.
You can get some pretty cool jewelry in that price range…it’s not like an engagement ring …bracelet, necklace earrings…personal but not overly personal.

“The reason I said ask her friends is because we don’t know her. She’s not a generic woman, she’s someone with an individual personality. They will be able to help him find a good gift for her and not for just a random college woman”

romani is exactly right. If he does not know her well enough to know what she’s interested in, and what she might like, her girlfriends might (and I’m not saying anything negative against him, it’s a guy thing…after almost 24 years of marriage, my husband still doesn’t know what to get for me)! If they are giving him generic answers, I’d guess they are kind of lazy and not making the effort to help, because we females generally have a good idea of the perfect thing to get a friend. And I’ve had several friends over the years mention to me that should their significant other ask what is a good idea to get for them, here is a suggestion.

Then again, if this is not a big deal for him and just a nice gift, it probably doesn’t matter much, it will be the thought that counts. It is hard for guys to pick out decent jewelry and clothes for women, though if he is very observant as to what kind of jewelry she wears, that might work. Can’t go wrong with a very large diamond, but that’s hard to get for 50 bucks.

Did I miss the occasion? Is this a 6 month anniversary or a birthday gift?

The thoughtful replies have inspired him to make her a jewelry box, since he knows some woodworking…thanks for the inspiration!

Don’t tell him that when they break up the box he so carefully crafted will get tossed in the trash.
Just saying…

Geez, I love these discussions. The worm gave a Le Crusent (sp?) soup pot. a ring frm the Tolkien series, theater tickets, along the way. I think this is one time son to mom conversationreally helps.

“Don’t tell him that when they break up the box he so carefully crafted will get tossed in the trash.”

Killjoy.
Maybe this is the one, you never know, and they will pass it on to their children. Or maybe they will part gently, leaving fond memories of a kind boyfriend who made something for her, with his own two hands. Now that, is a really sweet and meaningful gift. Nobody ever makes things for others anymore, that is rare.

A Tiffany heart.

I like the love letter idea. In an era of electronic messaging, I think a sweet, from the heart, old fashioned handwritten love letter would be very nice.

Apparently I have no romantic bones in my body–I was going to suggest a gift certificate for a pedicure! LOL

How about a pair of earrings to match or complement her eye color ?

The jewelry box sounds lovely, and won’t break his limited bank! D’s b.f. ordered custom-designed Converse high tops for her for their 1 year…I knew about them, as he had to email me to get her shoe size!

musicmom - I guess I’m not romantic either because I would be THRILLED if my boyfriend got that for me. Pedicures are relaxing!

Generically, jewelry does not work for everyone. I like jewelry in theory but I never wear what isn’t attached to me. Many of you would be giving very poor advice if the girl were me. :)

I think making the jewelry box is perfect. In my opinion, the thought that goes into making something for her is meaningful.

The jewelry box is a really nice idea for a gift (but I also find the pedicure pretty appealing!)
