What is the best university/College in Agriculture or Horticulture?

Hi,

I am from Greece and I want to study in the USA for a Bachelor in an Agriculture-related major. I don’t know which one is better.

I don’t want very difficult courses.

I’m not very smart at chemisty, maths, or physics. But I’m very good in Biology, and I like plants and growing crops, fruits and vegetables. But I don’t like animals very much especially pigs and cows.

As you may notice, English is not my first language, but I got 7.5 in IELTS (I don’t know how!)

1- What is better for me, a big university with high students to teachers ratio or colleges with a low ratio?

2- Which state in the US is better in these fields?

3- What are the best universities or colleges in these fields? and why?

4- Are liberal arts colleges suitable for me? Can you recommend one ot two.

5- The easier the application is, the better. I don’t know much about SAT, ACT etc.

Thank you,

Most programs in Agriculture and Horticulture are offered at large public universities. Some community colleges offer short programs for those majors. The only small college that I know of that offers this type of major is Delaware Valley College near Philadelphia. Here is a link to information about their majors: [Undergraduate « Academics « DelVal](http://www.delval.edu/academics/undergraduate/)

Talk with your parents about how they expect you to pay for your education. Most international students have to pay the full cost of their studies here because there aren’t many scholarships for international students. When you know how much money your family can pay, then you can use one of the college-matching search engines to find places that offer your major and that your family can afford. Here is one: [College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential - College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/)

You also should read through the information at https://www.educationusa.info/</a> Then you should contact the counselors at the advising center closest to where you live. There are two in Greece. https://www.educationusa.info/Greece</a> These counselors are expert at helping students from your country find good places to study in the US.

Thank you very much for your reply.

What about Berea College?

As another poster pointed out, most US universities with colleges of agriculture are large public universities. Most of these are designated as landgrant universities. Every state has one. Here is a list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_land-grant_</a>
You can check their admissions requirements, costs, and programs on their websites.
A liberal arts college would not be suitable for your stated interests.

It is usually possible to get a BS degree in general agricultural science or a more specialized BS degree in a subfield of agriculture. The names of the relevant departments for your stated interests might vary depending on the particular universities, but generally would include Agronomy or Crop Science, Horticulture, or Plant Sciences. A few universities also have programs in Viticulture & Enology.

For applied areas, almost all ag schools will offer competent programs. Many departments will focus their applied research on crops important to their state or region. If you plan to return to Greece, you should consider states that grow crops similar to those grown in Greece.

Berea does offer a major in Agriculture and Natural Resources. This might not be as specialized as you would like:

Cornell and University of California-Davis are the top 2 as far as I know.

How about The University of Iowa? It has excellent Horticulture and Agricultural studies.

Whoops! I meant to say Iowa State University, in Ames. NOT the University of Iowa. (I’m in trouble now!)

NC State University is a very large university that it is well known for Agriculture and related majors.
[NCSU CALS Academic Programs -Undergraduate Agricultural Sciences](http://harvest.cals.ncsu.edu/academic/index.cfm?pageID=1742)

The other option at NC State is a two year Associates Degree in an Ag. related field.
[NCSU CALS AGI -Agricultural Institute: Main](Agricultural Institute (AGI) < North Carolina State University)

The students attending the 2 year program have all the same benefits of the University that four year degree students receive. They live in the same dorms, eat in the dining halls, etc.

Most universities with “State” in their names will have an agriculture major or even an agriculture school. Unfortunately if money is a concern, most of these schools don’t give out financial aid based on need, only merit aid, so you’d need to take the ACT or the SAT, plus the TOEFL, to qualify.
Some examples of schools:
