<p>Job prospects for biology are very poor no matter how good the program is. I suggest you major in something that you can fall back on just in case medical school doesn’t work out.</p>
<p>Biostatistics or computer science would be great subject to major in. They make good careers and they would also help you if you go onto medical school.</p>
<p>Wait, I thought that majoring in biology would give me an option (other careers) if I don’t make it into medical school. Some other majors that I am considering are Biochemistry, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, and Physiology. Right now, I’m kind of heading towards Biology. <p>I have researched the job prospects for basically any science related major and there is some bad news. A large group of people who want to go to med school major in such topics such as Biology or Chemistry(not all). But when only ~20% of these graduates get into med school, what happens to the other 80% of Bio and Chem majors? They try to obtain entry level jobs and basically FLOOD the industry. Yes, some people are going to get some entry level jobs but there aren’t enough positions to full fill the amount of Bachelors in Bio/Chem. Then what happens is that there is a LARGE amount of these grads that are trying to get a job which makes getting a job at entry lvl (bachelors) more difficult. Next step for these “jobless” people is to get a higher degree. A lot of undergrads are going to go back to school for a Masters or PhD. Even at that level, the industry is flooded with people with masters and Phd. Yes it will be easier to get a job with an Masters or ultimately an PhD, but you will still have a mediocre paying job that is competitive to obtain which is making many confused pre-med students to rethink. I personally am going to major in Biochemistry when I graduate HS, so I don’t want to sound like a hippocrate, but that is the risk I am willing to take, and as long as you are determined to go to med school, you definitely should be able to get into 1 of the many MD/DO schools in the country or nation. I would advise you to think about what you want to major in before you just type in Biology in the “Major Selection” box on your app. Just make sure that you are 100% that you want to go to med school and stay determined enough to take the MCAT. And if you change your mind later on, almost all universities will allow you to change majors. I am still baffled at what I should do, and every time I see some statistics about med school acceptances, I literally freak out. Like everyone else, I do not want to be stuck with a unstable, low paying job for the rest of my life and that is why I am taking the time to research and make sure that I will be determined enough to ultimately take the MCAT and progress to med school. When I found out that the field of science is unstable and so-so I was shocked. But thats what it is and we must accustom to that fact and try our best to move our life in a path that will potentially lead us to a front door of a med school:) Take care and hope this helped;) Thats how us QCHS students do it.</p>

<p>Any reiteration of “biology” has poor job prospects (the ones you mentioned). The only way to have better prospects in those fields is to take computer science and extra math classes. These skills are lacking for most biology majors simply because most of them aren’t math-oriented and are trying to go to medical school (most of which don’t require a year of math). </p>
<p>Have you considered majoring in Geology? Geology is probably the best natural science major as of right now. The field is currently in a boom cycle, so job prospects are looking very good.</p>
