What is the Early Decision requirement exactly for an international student?

I am an international student.

If I am an Early Decision candidate for a particular university, and if I get admitted there, then I will have to withdraw application from all other US colleges and enroll there. But what if I decide to go to a college in my country or in a country other than USA? And what if I don’t get a student visa to USA? For both cases, what will be the repercussion?

Can an Early Decision candidate transfer to another college in USA or elsewhere?

ED is a special offer of the school where the acceptees receive a very tangible benefit: a slot on the roster by December. With it, you agree to give up “shopping” for other offers. Your searching for more offers in your home country violates this agreement. What is confusing about that? If you don’t want an ED binding agreement, don’t apply ED and apply RD instead. It’s rude and unfair of you to deal with the college with no intention to honor your side of the agreement. If they find out, they are perfectly able to withdraw your acceptance and turn you away.

If a Visa issue arises (certifiably – and not just as an excuse), then that’s another issue. Also, by the way – if you screw the college, then you can pretty much be assured that they will black list your high school and students won’t be admitted for a long time.

There you go. You want to be treated like an adult and get some adult perks? Make adult decisions and accept adult responsibilities.

If you don’t like the terms of ED, don’t accept them. That’s how simple that is.
