What is the Eugene Lang essay asking for?

I’m in the process of writing the supplement essay for Eugene Lang. The subject is:

“You have been elected the leader of a new populace. The future is in your hands. Outline a platform on environmental issues, education, and race and ethnicity. Be wise and be creative.”

First of all, that is a huge question, which will be hard to condense in “500 words approximately.”

However, my main problem is that I don’t understand how we’re supposed to answer.
Are they looking for an essay that evokes real political and economic notions? example: “controlled economy”
Or do they want us to write creatively like “I think we should make houses out of leaves (again an example).”
My question is, how realistic and feasible do the “platforms” have to be, and how do you think Eugene Lang is evaluating this essay? I’m so lost I don’t know how to approach this.

Can anyone please help me out, tell me how they understand the question? Those of you who applied, how did you interpret the subject? Were you comical? How creative did you get?

Thanks

Sorry to awake this thread from the dead…I guess not too many CCers are applying to Lang? But I am exactly as lost as you…what did you do in the end? Any others?

Thank you!

It’s due in three days and I still haven’t written it hehe What I think I’m going to do is write platforms that could actually be carried out. But what I don’t get is if we’re the chief of a country, or of a small tribe or what… That’s where I’m guessing we have to be creative and define who we’re governing. Are you done with yours yet?

wow, I’d love to know what happened with your applications. I wish I’d have found this earlier to give you my two cents. I applied to Lang in 2008 and wasn’t accepted. Possibly due to this essay and my tree hugging platform? lol. I honestly worked on the new populace essay for 3 months and I wrote pages and pages worth of drafts! I HATE this essay, I think it’s just terrible.

“a new populace”

do they mean like a brand new country/planet/etc. where no one has reigned or ruled the land before you? or is it like we’ve now been elected to take it over?

bummmppppppppp

i want to know too!!!

someone who wrote this before and was accepted what did you write about?

I’d love to hear what others wrote. Especially on the second question about the new populace.

I’m still working on mine. It’s due in two days, but I work better under a bit of pressure I find. (We’ll see how well that transfers to college work…)
