What is the GRE subject out of?

I am so confused. The ETS website says it is out of 990, but the practice booklet gives it as out of 900. I have seen other practice materials that score it as out of 950…

Well, I can’t answer your question specifically but I can say that I don’t think it matters. The percentile is more important than the actual score, so the question may not be relevant.

“One total score is reported on a 200-990 score scale, in 10-point increments, although the score range for any particular Subject Test is usually smaller.”

The first part is misleading and not very informative. It’s basically just saying that for a given subject test, the maximum score won’t be above 990 and the minimum score won’t be below 200. The second part is saying that subject tests won’t necessarily have 990 as the maximum score. I know the math subject test is scaled to have 900 as the maximum value, and other tests may be scaled to have other maximum scores. It’s possible that the practice materials are old and based on an outdated scaling.

Additionally, on some (all?) subject tests, the scaling actually varies from edition to edition in order to keep the test’s scale system consistent with the difficulty level – that way, say, a 610 on Psychology GRE Form 192A is equivalent to a 610 on Psychology GRE Form 192B (or 201C or whatever)
