What is the I-Series?

I’m starting my essays for UMD’s application process and would like to answer question four which addresses the I-Series program. For this question, I have to design my own I-Series program, but I don’t know what it is other than what the UMD website states. Can a current student please elaborate and maybe give me an example of an I-Series class they’ve taken?

Think of the “i” in i-series as “interesting”…look at the list of previous and current i-series offerings and use that as inspiration. Here is the current list
https://ntst.umd.edu/soc/gen-ed-courses.html?term=201308&gen-ed-code=SCIS</a></p>

Think about what is in the news and making headlines…what deep questions do the headlines raise, what conversations do they spark?

Think about what movies are out and what makes them popular (the questions they answer or the fears they raise).

For example, an older but popular movie is Terminator (and T-2 Judgement Day, and T-3 Rise of the Machines) because there is a real fear of what could happen if artificial intelligence becomes self-aware and takes over - the rise of the machines…Matrix is a more recent interpretation/answer to that question.

Now take a look at the i-series class CMSC 289I which is entitled Rise of the Machines: Artificial Intelligence Comes of Age.

Now think about the Snowden security leak and then look at HONR278D - National Security Dilemmas.

Get the idea? Look at the headlines in the news and the storylines that are continously told and retold in the movies.

Hope this helps…

I’m considering doing that essay topic now, maryversity! I think I need to add more creativity and that’d be a great essay to think about personally

Wow, thanks maryversity. You offered some very good advice! It most certainly does help!
