What IS the Music Theatre program at NYU?

Hi everyone!

It may seem a stupid question but I can’t even find out information on the website of NYU about any Music Theatre program aside from the writers’ one.

Is it a normal program like Michigan, CCM or the swag of others?

Will someone please shed some light for a very confused young man.

Thanks!

Yes, NYU has a musical theater program that is a BFA conservatory approach within a university setting, much like the others you mention. Actually, NYU has TWO musical theater programs, one that is a BFA through the Tisch School of th Arts (in the Drama Department) and one that is a BM in the Steinhardt School which is a Music Department.

Tisch contracts out the conservatory part of the degree program at 8 private professional studios in NYC. Seven of these studios are primarily drama but one of the studios is for musical theater only. That studio is called Collaborative Arts Project 21 which is referred to as CAP21 for short (you will se CAP21 mentioned on this website a lot and posters are referring to the musical theater program at NYU/Tisch).

To learn more about this program, first you may wish to visit the site for Tisch School of the Arts:

NYU Tisch School of the Arts;

Then, you should visit the Drama Department which can be found here:

http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/page/home.html

You should explore the entire drama department site but then especially also visit the link for the Professional Studios:

http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/page/studios.html

If you then click on “Primary Studios”, you can get the link to each training studio, including CAP21. The link for CAP21 is here:

http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/DR_CAP21.html

That link above describes the musical theater program through NYU/Tisch. This includes the course of study:

http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/DR_CAP21_2.html

You may also wish to visit the website for CAP21 (the studio itself, not just the part affiliated with NYU):

http://www.cap21.org/

I hope this helps. The musical theater writing program at NYU/Tisch is just for graduate school. The BFA in musical theater at CAP21 through NYU/Tisch is for undergraduates.

NYU Steinhardt also has a conservatory approach for Music Theatre. The students get a degree in voice performance with a specialization in musical theatre. The curriculum includes acting, dance and musical theatre workshops. The students chosen for this degree do a senior showcase for agents at the end of their senior year. There are also 6-7 musicals including one or two operas. The question would be are you a singer that acts? If so, this would be the way to go. 15-25 admitted each year.
