What is the NCAA Compliance Meeting?

My S has been told that he should attend an NCAA Compliance meeting. One in scheduled in our area next month. What is it?

My guess it that it would be a workshop on how to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse (something every athlete needs to do to be recruited), and would cover the rules governing amateur status, contact with college coaches, official visits, and other recruiting details.

that sounds like a football or basketball player meeting. NCAA rules actually apply in those two sports:) So maybe the NCAA wants to lecture athletes on the dos and donts of recruitment…for the benefit of the kid so they don’t do something ill-advised like take an envelope of money:)

is he a football or basketball player?

further, my understanding of NCAA clearinghouse and compliance is that it’s pretty simple. An online form I think and I think my D sent some form via regular mail as well, and the school sends transcripts to verify the base line NCAA requirements such a C or better gpa and the corresponding very low SAT score requirement. stuff like that.

found this on a random college site: [Compliance Meeting](http://www.potsdam.edu/athletics/ath083109.cfm)

maybe it’s something all athletes are required to do…I don’t think my D has heard about any required meeting yet from her college.

We never went to (or heard about) a meeting (D is now D1 athlete), however, the college coach reminded incoming freshmen throughout the summer that they needed to finish their NCAA clearinghouse paperwork before they could compete in the fall. Generally this is just providing NCAA with a final transcript, on top of the other forms the student would have filled out when they registered with NCAA- asserting amateur status, and so on. The meetings probably spell out these deadlines/requirements. The college coach can tell you what you need to have done in order to be in compliance.

Our experience was similar to riverrunner’s. Our S’s college coach gave him instruction in the summer before he enrolled about what he needed to do to make sure he complied with NCAA rules/regulations. Then once he enrolled in fall of freshman year, he had to attend an NCAA compliance workshop on campus, but not before he enrolled. Maybe a difference across sports?

Don’t have to do for D3 prior to attending, anyway.

can anyone clarify this? my D will be at a Div 3 in the fall but what if she ever plays a sport or transfers to a Div 1? what if she joins crew or some other sport she has not played?- she got a notice to complete her NCAA registration (graduating senior) but what does she put for sports, etc?

found the answer in the FAQ- you let them know of a different sport but still have to register now for academic registration and one sport registration
