So, here is the deal. Basically, I am a 3.45 (or a 3.5 GPA student since I like to round up to the nearest tenths) and it is frustrating because I should be a 4.0 student (basically, it’s something all admissions officers see in my application since recovering from a 2.8 GPA is no easy task). Anyways, I cannot qualify for phi theta kapa because my GPA is .05 pts lower. But all they do is offer scholarships and supposedly make your resume look better (I kind of fudged my college apps though to say I am from that organization because the chances of them actually checking is slim to none).
But other than that, what is the point of a scholarship if you have parents who can pay hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loans? I mean, aren’t scholarships for people with bums in their family who cannot afford to pay their tuition and expenses? I honestly see no purpose of scholarships for someone like me. Even if I did academically qualify for them, what is the purpose? It’s not like it is going to fully cover my cost. Don’t get me wrong, it would be cool to have someone fully pay for college for me, but if not, then who cares if I got parents who will pay for it?
Not trying to brag about myself or anything, but I just want to know if there is a point for bothering with scholarships for someone like me.

Are you ok?
Anyway…do you attend a CC?
Your parents have said that they can afford hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans?? If that’s the case, why wouldn’t they just pay upfront? Why borrow and pay interest??
Even if your parents are willing and able to pay $200k+ for college, wouldn’t it be a nice thing to help them reduce that cost so that they could direct that savings to something else?
You know…it’s very easy to verify who is and isn’t a member.
I hope you understand that false information on an application can very much affect your prospects of admission…what I mean is…you won’t get accepted with lies on your application.
ETA…you posted this elsewhere on this forum…so,are you feeding the posters here a line of goods too? What IS your GPA?
Not all low income people are bums. Many people you would probably deem as foolish choose jobs that are low paying because they contribute to the good of society. Others work hard at unskilled jobs because they did not have rich parents to fund their educations. There are many many very decent and honorable people who are among the working poor.
Those who earn scholarships don’t as a whole gloat that others are paying for their educations as if they were taking advantage of the donors. They appreciate the gift that they are receiving.
In my honest opinion, I think it is stupid that they would deny someone that close in the first place who actually, you know, takes tough courses? What about the dumb kids who are taking college algebra or trig and never taken tough courses like I have that are in that society? Why should they have a better looking college application than me? Like I said, in my opinion, I proven myself to be a 4.0 student, so I do consider myself apart of that club. I mean, if people can suddenly wake up one day and identify themselves as a female, then why can’t I just identify myself as a member of the phi theta kappa club?
I’ll admit, I had lenient parents who didn’t make me push enough and spoiled me a little too much. But is it fair to punish a child for having parents that kind of failed them? Like I said, I wish I would have performed as well in the beginning of community college as I have in the past year and a half. I just think it is unfair how I should be punished for reasons that were beyond my scope.
I’m sorry about my rant. I see a lot of parents on this forum who care about education, and to be honest with you, I wish I was raised by you guys so I could be like your kids and go to an ivy league or somewhere up top. Yeah, my parents are wealthy, but my mother never went to college and my father mainly got wealthy from “street smarts” since all he has is an associates degree from some no-name state college from New York. So as you could imagine, my parents never really made me push that much in school and never cared if my grades were good or not.
If I knew the education system today was soo unforgiving, then I would have dropped school ages ago, change identity, and start over somewhere else at a different community college. Even if I did have to rely on scholarships, at least I would actually be able to qualify and not have to rely on my father to pay off my tuition and housing.
Note that some scholarships only posted the minimal requirement (e.g. GPA 3.5), it does not mean anyone with that GPA will get it. It is very unlikely if someone barely made it to the requirement and receive the scholarship anyway. One can afford college education and one can afford paying back the loan for college are very different situation. I am sure there are families do not need scholarships at all. But for those who are relying on loan to pay for college education, every dollar helps. I can afford my house with a 20 year mortgage, it does not mean it would not be a burden to me at all. Student loan is at that magnitude.
