What is the proper way to dispose your old laptop?

Any ideas? Is it considered hazardous if i disassemble the whole thing (unscrew everything I can find) and throw out the pieces? I assume it is the pieces that’s hazardous for the environment.

Should I throw out one compartment at a time?

Anyone know?

I think BestBuy has a way to properly dispose of laptops and any electronics.

You can also check in with your local government recycling office. Mine refers people to a local company that accepts all electronics for recycling. They don’t charge any money to accept electronics, except it is $10 for a monitor.

Or if it’s still working and is a Macbook, send it to me :P

I was under the impression that the proper way of dealing with an old laptop was to let it sit in a cupboard or box somewhere.

Assuming you can’t resell it for a decent price, of course.

I think it’s just the battery that’s really bad to throw out… I’m not sure though. You should harvest the hard drive memory and any other things you or someone else can use if those parts are not broken and are not outdated.

Look for computer recyclers in your area. See if there’s a FreeGeek or something similar.

Even if your laptop seems dead, chances are, there are salvageable components inside that some people might appreciate. Disposing of the rest of the laptop is a very involved process.

Dispose of everything regularly except the hard drive.

There should be electronics recycling / salvage places that will take it.

Be sure to write random data over the entire hard drive if you are concerned about someone getting your private data from it.

sledgehammer

List it on ebay. You can easily make a few bucks. It can’t hurt if all you’re going to do is throw it out anyways. Even laptops that don’t work, people sell for parts. I’ve definitely made $50-100 before by selling non-working laptops on Ebay and it only costs a couple of dollars to list it.
