What is the relationship between QuestBridge & Columbia

Is Columbia enthusiastic about their QB applicants, or is it more of chore for them?

There are some QB students who have posted on here before if I am not mistaken.

But having learned a bit about the process and asked Columbia adcoms about it when i still was around - the thing to be clear about QB is that it isn’t ideal for students that have their top choice already selected because it is possible you could be matched with a school that isn’t your preferred school, or not at all.

Its like the Med School Residency match system. Schools usually get like 10 students they can match and they rank them from 1-10, and then students rank the schools they apply to. It becomes entirely possible you wont get into the school that is your first choice because columbia might want to rank you 6, which is hard if another school ranks you higher than that. So it becomes complicated.

Beyond that I don’t know what Columbia thinks about QB students nor what it entails, but I guess the fact that they are still part of the program says something.

Actually, with how the Match works, you can’t get a choice you don’t want when a school higher on your list wants to rank you. It is true that sometimes you might get in to a college regular admission while not being high on their match list. So, it isn’t as complicated as it seems. The Match is weighted to the student’s preferences, as it should be.

I am the Founder of QuestBridge by the way, and its important to usthat the student’s preferences are the most important thing.

As the founder can you explain if QB actually gives you a leg up?
now many colleges give poorer students full-rides either wa.

^I’m wondering the same thing. Can being a questscholar significantly increase the chance of acceptance compare to other hooks such as legacy and athletes?

I have posted some on this before. I am a 2013 Questbridge Columbia Student. If I can help answer your questions, I will try. I personally feel that Questbridge was more of a shining light rather than hook. It is not something that can single-handedly get you in. It is your application that will do the work for you. The process of QB is very rigorous and those who get to the Selection process are already stellar students for the most part. I felt that QB really did help me get my foot in the door but I did not stop at that. I went to the Columbia engineering experiences and made sure the admission officer got to know me better than what they could garner off of the application.

I would say weigh your matches well, so that you dont regret it in the future, and be serious about your application.

I found a really good reception with the questbridge officer.

drake333, Columbia is definitely my dream school. If you’re matched with Columbia, do you have any idea approximately how many students were matched with Columbia? Do you think I would have a better chance to get in if I choose to apply ED to Columbia without QB?

The number of ppl accepted was either 10 or 11, dont remember if i count myself

for your second question: I would not be able to tell you that based on just persona exp, it really depends on your app, and if you like the other schools QB is partnered with. if Columbia is the one you really want in i would say go ED.

@MMcCulloughQB - I have very good extracurriculars and achievements, but my SAT score isn’t as high as I would like it to be. I planned on retaking it in October but of course the QB application id due on September 30. Would my SAT score decrease my chance of becoming a finalist?

@drake333- Congratulations on your QB scholarhsip! Did you rank Columbia first? Or was it just one of the colleges you ranked and colleges you ranked before it were not a match for you…

I ranked it first. Also here is a large thread on questbridge. you may find it useful.

There may be some newer threads, but I cant imagine the information changing that much.

thanks alot drank! =)

Well I just have another question…
my SAT score isn’t really the most impressive number in the world…I’m actually only in the 1800’s…but I have so many other accomplishments all regarding neuroscience research, I have many financial struggles I am going through and I explained the reason for my passion, how dedicated I was to research and showed it through all the science awards and beings recognized by different organizations…
then I explained my future plans in one of my essays, to continue in neurology and go on to med school…
i’m still ranked either 1st or second in my high school, and i have a 4.0 UW gpa

but do you think an sat score like mine would significantly hurt my chance of admission? if you don’t mind, could you post your stats? or your approximate stats?

dont let your scores stop you… i was in a very similar situation. Also do well on your subject tests and take some ap’s tests.

Thank you drake! I heard that most people who got matched had a EFC of ZERO. Is that true? Let’s say my EFC is 0, so do I have a higher chance than many of the richer kids even though they also have a better score and GPA?

@z "do I have a higher chance than many of the richer kids even though they also have a better score and GPA? " I am not sure if anyone can know that for certain. I dont know for sure; however, my guess is that Columbia wants diversity so they will pick from both pools.

“most people who got matched had a EFC of ZERO” that is true.
