What is the typical work schedule like?

If you’ve worked as an engineer what was your work schedule like and what was the field?

I am an Industrial Engineering Intern, but I work right along side other engineers. Process Engineering for the Railroad. The schedule is 7-4 or 8-5 (you can pick), M-F. Some travel. I have been here since January and have went out of town for a total of 2 weeks, and that is the most anyone else has left too.

There is LOTS of variation. Most engineers that I know are salaried (no overtime pay) and work at least some overtime.

Col mom is right. I am an intern also and I work overtime all the time. I do 8 to 530, this is considered minimum. sometimes I have to stay till 6:30 or 7:00. I start 8 every day.

Hmmm, just out of curiosity, does anyone know how much vacation days there are each year? …on average of course, no job is exactly alike

2 to 3 Weeks TenMore. 6 sick days.

It seems like many college grad engineers start with 2 or 3 weeks… sometimes with more added with 5 or 10 years seniority.

I worked as an intern with a transportation engineering firm. Typical hours for the engineers were 9am-6pm, with a 1 hour lunch. When there’s field data to be collected during certain times of the day (such as pedestrian or vehicle counts), hours will vary somewhat depending on the needs of the project. Hours will also increase when deadlines are near.
