From particularly December through February, you can have this constant nightmare where everything is just white and you keep piling on more and more clothes on yourself but you can never get warm and your hands and ears ache like they are going to fall off.

That nightmare is called winter in Illinois.

UIUC is in Champaign and Urbana (sister cities) and the area has a population of about 100,000. And you are correct that as soon as you go outside those small cities you will find farms, trees, and only small towns 50 miles in any direction. It is also very flat (no mountains, no big hills).

Nevertheless, this is a huge university and activities abound including parties, sports, campus theaters, restaurants, bars (for those who can enter – though drinking age is 21 many allow entry if you are 19 but you get marked for no alcohol consumption).

psp-fifa-fan if you missed visiting ARC when you were there you missed a lot. It is unbelievable. You should check it out online. it is the largest student rec center in the country. Great facility. Can’t see how it would be crowded. It is bigger and better than what was there before. It is a great addition to the campus.
kawaiigurl- A rec center is a place for students to work out, play b-ball, take rec classes, swim etc. You should check it out online too.

The worst part about Illinois is the Bros. Too many drunken frat boys and sorority girls dancing at Stayshhhhh in what looks and smells like a primal mating ritual. If you’re cool with chauvinism, anti-intellectualism, and conformity then Champaign is the place for you. Otherwise, take a step east of Wright St. into a little granola town called Urbana and you will be much happier.

You’re going to have the drunken frat guys/sorority girls at any large university, though. And if they bother you so much, don’t go to Station…

I have to agree with the winter though, its terrible. I’m even from central Illinois, but it just seems so much worse and more depressing in Champaign-Urbana.

The winters wouldn’t be nearly as bad without the wind. I am going to say that the TWO worst things about Chambana are the wind, and Station 211.

Well nearly every person in that bar is greek, and on top of things, it is generally the d-bag type of greek students that like to go there, so for me, it stands for everything that is wrong about greek life in college.

gotcha. do engineers seem to be in any one fraternity or none at all or is it pretty random? would you say it would be hard to be in a frat and be in the engineering curriculum? I guess it is hard to say if you are not in a frat but you can take a guess if you want!?

I’m not in a frat, but I have plenty of engineering friends who are. It is possible, but not necessary. Most engineers are not in frats, but that shouldn’t be a deterrent.
