What is this award?

Just got a letter in the mail saying that D has earned a "President's Award for Excellence in Education" for outstanding effort and scholastic achievement and will get a certificate with her diploma for this at graduation. Since I'd never heard of this before I tried Googling it as various keyword subsets (as well as the whole title in quotes) and got a lot of hits regarding teacher awards but not student ones.

So I am of course thrilled at the word "award" (yay!) but not sure what it is and how they determine who gets one.

Is this college or high school?

Our middle schools award that to the highest GPA students at the end of 8th grade. It's very neat, signed by Bush the year my D graduated and by Obama the my S was. I don't think our high schools award it to anyone.

Sounds like the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) program:

The President's Education Awards Program, sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education, in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals and NASSP, was developed to help principals recognize and honor those students who have achieved high academic goals by their hard work and dedication to learning.

Students are eligible for one of two honors: the President's Award for Educational Excellence or the President's Award for Educational Achievement. For each award students receive certificates signed by the President, the U.S. Secretary of Education and you. A congratulatory letter from the President is included with the awards. There are also optional lapel pins, inscribed with the Presidential Seal, to accompany the certificates. There is no limit on the number of awards that your school can order, as long as the students meet the criteria presented.

@Hunt: high school.

@ALF: That looks like it might be it. It let me refine my search parameters and I found this: NAESP | National Association of Elementary School Principals which, if it also applies to the middle and high school levels, it at last tells me why. Thanks!

Both of my daughters got these at the end of 5th grade. They got a certificate. Just like JVT DAD, One signed by Bush, the little one's by Obama.

Our youngest got this at the end of 5th grade as well. He got a pin along with the certificate.

LeftyLou, D&S got the birth congratulations from Clinton. Can you beat that? Hahaha! (BTW, it's a "cheap" way to thrill the new parents... wow, those were the days :)).
