What is that decision called when you receive an acceptance letter from a college, confirm you want to attend but would like to wait for at least one semester before registering for classes??

It sounds like you would like a deferral – Us vary about how they treat this and whether they allow you to take courses and keep your funding. It’s best to ask the U when you receive the acceptance. Many Us are OK with deferrals of a term or a year, but it does vary. Some folks feel that it’s more advantageous for students to enter in the fall with other students, for socialization and because some courses have sequences that start in the fall, which is another consideration. Our D transferred in the spring, but it worked out for her, since she had friends at the U who had started in the fall.

It is also called a gap year. A few of the more selective colleges have a special program they run for gap year students.
