What is typical allowance from parents?

I’m wondering what a typical allowance amount is for a freshman? How much of their own summer earnings vs how much parental allowance do you get?

Thanks

ZERO!

Im a freshman, I EARNED scholarships to pay for roughly 85% of my first year costs… the only things my parents are really paying for is the other 15% from my college fund and the money to get me to and from school every other weekend (I live about 45 mins away)

During my freshman year, with not having worked the summer before & having the 19 Premiere Plan, I had about $200 per month, mainly for on campus eating & $100 of spending money for the random things. Parents would cover the textbooks. I get no financial aid, and I did receive a $1000 scholarship out of high school.

Nowdays, living in the apartments I get about $400/mo for all food and other goodies. (I don’t ask for textbook money, having had an internship the past two summers).

I just get $20 now and then to put on my bruincard for whatever. No need for them to dish out anything right now - I dont see why I would need anymore because of campus housing and dining plan and finaid is covering everything for now.

I just use the money for a coffee every other day on campus.

We are paying enough tuition, our son has to work for his books, clothes, and personal expenses. He has a full meal plan that we pay for. The rest is his problem, and believe me, it prevents sitting around all summer checking out facebook. He came home after 2 weeks and said “Mom, my books cost $600.” I looked up and said “Mmm”. Case closed!

Ya… UCLA is a public school… most of us haven’t had an allowance since we turned 16 and either work or live off our loan money. And I wish my parents paid for my tuition ;(

0

Never ever had allowance. Didn’t know people get allowances after hitting 16 either.

wow some harsh parents for ppl on here… my parents don’t typically give me allowance, they just give me some money whenever my account runs out… they know im responsible enough to not blow money away and i average about $300 a quarter (probably less)… when i lived in the dorms i ate out about once every 2 weeks or so (19 meals is way more than enough for everyone, with the variety of dining halls i have no problem eating every meal in the dorms, only times i eat out is when a group of friends decides to go to westwood for a change)… i spend some money on other little things such as stationary in the beginning of the quarter, laundry, some new cloth every couple of month when i see a sale (mostly online)
so i would say 50ish is plenty for someone that lives in the dorms, they should be able to eat every meal in the dorms as they have a meal plan, it would be kind of a waste if they eat out a lot… 50 should cover the occasional group dinner in westwood, some of the needs such as laundry, stationary and such… i personally would suggest keeping an eye on what he/she is getting instead of just giving the routine monthly allowance and not care for what it is spent on…

Same .

i must say that getting grounded and getting allowance are white people things.

^ that made me lol

“Never ever had allowance. Didn’t know people get allowances after hitting 16 either.”

Does $10 a week for lunch count as an allowance, if so i am guilty, if not… we’re in the same boat ;(

i get allowance, im filipino/asian or whatever, i only get 50 in cash to use on whatever a month, im allowed to use my credit card on books, fees, and food only, so i just use the cash on clothes or events, my parents pay for my college

No allowance. I worked for a year during my senior year, so my parents are making me spend that money before they’re giving me anything outside of school expenses, textbooks inclusive. Actually they can see all of my bank transactions and they’ve audited me for all of my expenses. Imagine having to explain why you have to withdraw $40 every other week.

I used to get 200$ a month last year. This was used to pay for everything I did, even when I was home, and my textbooks, fees for clubs, etc. and general saving (since I didn’t have one before - they had emptied it out earlier to pay for something else).

Now I have a “job” kind of and then they give me 20$ a month.

I just ask them for money whenever I need to pay something (tuition, books, housing/rent, etc).

Never had a monthly/weekly allowance, but I get money from relatives for birthdays, Chinese New Year, etc which I save up to buy personal stuff.

well i get money whenever i ask for it, and my mom refills my bank account when it’s short of money. i guess that’s better than having an allowance.

This is a good thread 'coz I’m having problems with my family over this issue
I’m an international student living in an apartment, and I get $500 a month. My sister is in MBA program and she gets $1000 a month, not including rent.
I’ve been telling my father that she doesn’t need $1000 a month and how unfair it is that we get different allowances, but what the heck, he’s willing to pay a thousand for her.
so i guess $500 is considered a lot…and usually I spend about $400 on grocery+food and I save $100 every month in my bank acct. I’ve been saving a lot since I was young so I have over 10K in my acct. =P

you kids are spoiled…

^serious!!!

My mom put $500 on my Bruin Card. She figures it should last me for the next 4 years, but I’ve already spent $100.
