What is typical for release of first semester HS grades?

My son’s private Jesuit boys high school unexpectedly changed their release date for first semester grades. Son is a junior, and his 1st 2 years saw grades/transcripts released a few days before Christmas. This Monday, 12/21, an assistant principal emailed all students to let them know grades will be available Jan 5, the day before 2nd semester begins. No explanation for delay. No email to parents. No info on school website. I think this is totally annoying, especially with the delay in College Board PSAT scores to Jan 7. It is also strange because this private school has been loading up on staff/admin jobs, including a filled Registrar position as of last summer. I’m curious from other CC parents: do your high schools get 1st semester grades out pre Xmas, right after Xmas, or ?

D’s first semester (public school) doesn’t end until January 20. Generally grades are released about 5 days after exams (although there is a website you can keep checking to get a preview of what the grades will be).

At my kids’ high school, the first semester doesn’t even end until the third week of January. They start sending out semester grades a week after the conclusion of the marking period.

Here in NY it’s sometime in January. We don’t start school till after Labor Day. The colleges all said they just wait to read the NY applications.

Our school ended first semester at the end of January as well until this year. So no grades until then. This year the semester ended last week but teachers do not have to submit grades until Jan 5th so grades will still be after Christmas, remember teachers would like to have a holiday too!

Exams were last week and most teachers got everything in the online grade book by Friday. Transcripts won’t be official until mid to late January though.

It depends on the school. The timing at your HS should be no issue at all.

What seems to be the problem? Why should it matter whether it is before or after xmas.

I am also wondering why it matters. Our school gets them out in mid January and they get to colleges in time.

OP’s son is a junior so this isn’t a mid year report issue.

Maybe teachers don’t want to be contacted by students and their parents over the holidays who want to know why an A wasn’t earned.

Our kids don’t get report cards sent home. All their grades are online and parents check them at their leisure.

Our high school semester ends at the later end of January, my daughter’s midyear report was sent out shortly after that and there were no problems. A couple years ago, the high school got a new student management system over the winter vacation. The data transfer from the old sms and implementation happened over the winter holiday and there was about 10 days when it was not possible to look up your student’s grades and whatnot. Once the implementation was finished, things got back to normal quickly.

To the OP…why does this date matter to you? If you tell us, maybe we can respond more appropriately. Why do you care about this release date at all…never mind for a HS junior.

ETA…the first semester exams at our high school are the second to last week in January. So midterm marks would not be available until at least then. That is also when progress reports are again sent home.

Doesn’t matter. They still do. My H is a HS teacher and he’s gotten plenty of emails as soon as school was out for the holidays. But I’ll repeat that the change in date could be to allow the teachers and staff to have some time off to relax.

Hopefully OP will come back and tell us what the real issue is so we can address that, but I doubt there is anything that is going to happen between now and the new year that requires one to have their semester grades completed.
