What is Wharton? Is it really all everyone cracks it up to be?

only the best undergrad business school in the nation (and prolly the world)…will it help you in the actual business world, who knows?..does it look good on your resume? hell yea…is business all about appearance and image? basically…connect the dots

I though wouldn’t recommend Wharton or any undergraduate business. Learn about something else in the world, THEN learn business skills and apply them to what you want to do. I hear kids in Wharton saying “I want to start a business” but they don’t have any actual vision of what they’d want to start a business for. Business should be the means to doing something, not the end in and of itself.

…Yeah, I’m in SAS.

hmm i think you’d be surprised.

in my lgst 210 class we covered a ton of philosophy, like psychological egoism, consequentialism, euthyphro, for example. i was about to enroll in an intro philosophy class at my state school over the summer, but when i got the syllabus i realized i knew almost everything already.

there are a lot of arts & sciences-like classes too. fnce 101 is intermediate macroeconomics. the stat classes aren’t blatantly business either. even classes like corp fin are a lot more theoretical with more proofs than you would think.

also a lot of students at other arts and sciences schools take at least introductory business classes. i think someone told me harvard has intro accounting classes and an econ class that covers corporate finance. you also see a number of SAS kids taking acct 101 or fnce 100. a lot of wharton students also get a dual degree with SEAS or SAS.

proofs? like geometric proofs?

Wharton is famous for its finance… which leads to a career in ibanking or consulting. Its the number 1 business undergrad in the world…

how can you be here and not know what wharton is?

trololololol

My friend keeps trying to tell me that notre dame has the best undergrad business in the country. It makes me laugh.

Wharton’s name carries the same weight as Harvard in the business world. Also, the number of Wharton alums you find in finance, consulting, and any other business-related career is staggering

whortan is the music school in uPenn right?

If the sound of making money is music to ya, then yup. Cha-ching!

Wow. This thread is from 2004. Hahaha.

@Ivystriver2

well if you go by BusinessWeek rankings…then they’re right and Wharton is actually 4th

But those rankings are ludicrous…

Yes, the rankings are absolutely ludicrous…unless we are first :)

OP: it really does teach you real world skills, so that transition from academics to the real world is not as abrupt as with other schools in the nation. Explore huntsman hall for a couple hours and you’ll feel as if you were immersed in business. Whether it be fnce, mktg, mgmt, acct, the school gives you a solid foundation for the skills needed to hit the ground running.
