What is wrong in the U.S?

What is messed up in the U.S right now(not foreign policy), which we could fix through legistlative change, if we had better politicians.

Try to make a list. Just copy the this, and add onto the list:

Gun Control

Gun Control

Rising Education Costs

How would that be bad? People still end up going to college, right?

social security privatization/ healthcare supported by govt

legolas, it traps the middle class unless they have a college fund, or the student saved/got good merit aid.

I understand that. But, it ends up, the people who want to go to college, do.

yeah, except that it’s so expensive it may become not worth it. Here’s an article about it in my local newspaper:

http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,645194292,00.html

ah, that makes sense. i was about to say, you can’t fix problems here in the states haha.

environmental stewardship

I second the one about rising education costs…I suggest free higher education for everyone.

I’m going to add 5. COMPLETE AND TOTAL lack of ability to budget money in a sensible manner, and 6. Insensible tax laws…(translation: GET RID OF THE IRS)

the mentality of the people

Gun Control

Rising Education Costs

Social Security Privatization

Healthcare Supported by Govt

Environmental Stewardship

COMPLETE AND TOTAL lack of ability to budget money in a sensible manner

Insensible Tax Laws…(translation: GET RID OF THE IRS)

The Mentality of the People

Illegal Immigration (how about actually enforcing our immigration laws for a change? …and stop giving them benefits that should only go to legal immigrants/residents and citizens)

…and I’m so against free healthcare and higher education it’s not even funny. It sounds nice and all but would be a complete disaster.

In order of importance:

1) Scholastic failure by domestic students
2) Personal debt
3) National debt

Things like gun control, illegal immigration, and stem cell research are not important issues in the long term. The huge divide between American students and East Asian students (and European students) as well show big long term problems for the US. A growing personal and national debt can cause years of problems…

Would you prefer a system where only about 30-40% of students studied academic subjects in high school, and slightly less than half of these got into college? That is the East Asian system in a nutshell.

Katho I am with you. But I do like gun control. How else would you hit the target? :D

Oh ya, some more things…
-Antitrust laws
-Corporate welfare
-Political correctness
-Drug restrictions
-Government interference in moral issues
etc

stem cell research is really important. if right-wing fundies are able to quash scientific research on religious grounds, there’s no point in conducting research in the USA if the gov’t can step in whenever you do something controversial. if i was a researcher working on stem cells, i’d be out of the country by now.

it would be a disaster to have healthy, educated people? ***?

the justification for not having free healthcare is understandable. the debate about doling out money for health services touches on a fundamental philosophical question about whether or not a social contract exists and, if it does, what it requires.

i can’t see for the life of me, however, why higher education is a bad thing.

So would I. Oh, and the CIA spent 20 mil in the 60s or 70s to keep up with Russian research on ‘telepathy’ and ESP…

What is wrong in the US? you ask…I strongly suggest that it is the disjointed need or focus to find what’s wrong. Y’all might find it more productive to approach the important issues needing change from the “What is right and good in the US?” first. Try the old Ben Franklin approach to problem solving. It also makes for a less whiny sounding bunch of posts.

I think he left out something…like government sponsored higher education? Or perhaps he is against the Democrat control over education.

Yep I agree there is too much gun control right now :)

iloveagoodbrew has a very very good one - government trying to regulate moral/religious issues. We should have a completely secular government. Religion is a thing of the people and it is their choice. They should not expect government to legally codify their religious beliefs. There should be no prayer in public schools (schools are for education only, parents are responsible for children’s religion). There should be no 10 commandments or other religious symbols in public buildings. Period.
I am absolutely depressed that these things are such big issues for us in America. Its embarassing that we can’t figure out that religion has no place in a government that governs such a diverse people.

Another big one I think is the lack of enforcement of the free speech. I simply can’t believe how many people think it is their right not to be offended. People have the right to say whatever the hell they want and it is a beautiful thing - only exception should be statements that lead to a violation of another person’s rights. Thus, “political correctness” in any form is simply foolishness.
