My favorite chocolate chip IC is Baskin Robbins - hand scooped, not pre-packed. For some reason I love the flavor of their chips. DQ- chocolate chip banana blizzard- made with the dip cone chocolate. Also the pecan mudslide. I make homemade IC in the summers, but otherwise don’t eat vanilla. Graeter’s black cherry chocolate chip is amazing- only had it once and still remember it.
I started reading this thread and had to reach into the freezer to get a container(14 oz) of HD rum raisin. I also love anything with caramel. I don’t eat much sweets, only ice cream. I probably have it once or twice a week, but I usually have 3-5 containers of ice cream in the freezer. My biggest to myself since I live by myself now is I like to eat out of the container. I stop doing it when D2 comes home. She is usually such a great sport, but last time she is home she asked me to get some other flavors.
I have a soft spot for DQ. Growing up in the midwest my father was very frugal, but DQ was the only place my father would stop for because he loved DQ’s ice cream. Whenever we would see DQ, one of us would start to scream so my father would stop. My favorite was vanilla soft ice cream with caramel dip.
Whenever any of you are in Southern California----make a stop at the best ice cream kitchen in the US:
http://www.carmelaicecream.com (and they have ice cream making classes!) The original is here in Pasadena. Flavors are intense enough so that one scoop is plenty.
Wow! That’s a new one to me. Thanks for the tip!
Brands: Ben & Jerry’s, Haagen-Dazs, a couple other premium brands i’m forgetting. Or anything that’s on sale.
Flavors: Blue moon (I wish it was more widely available), pistachio, chocolate-peanut butter, chocolate-brownie, strawberry cheesecake, mint chocolate chip.
Setting: Bowl, waffle cone or sugar cone.
Or just… whatever my wife wants. “Honey, may I have a bite…?”
I had to look up what Blue Moon is. It has its own wiki page:
“Blue Moon is an ice cream flavor with bright blue coloring available in the Upper Midwest of the United States. The Chicago Tribune has described the ice cream as “Smurf-blue, marshmallow-sweet, and tasting remarkably like Froot Loops and Fruity Pebbles”. Blue Moon ice cream is one of the flavors which make up Superman ice cream.”

Sounds too sweet to me. Does it make your tongue turn blue?
I discovered Dreyer’s Frozen Custard just in time for summer. OMG delicious!
Haagen-Dazs Pralines & Cream. After that, there are several flavors of both Haagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s I will buy. At the dining hall, I will eat whatever non-choc/van/strawberry flavor they have.
At an ice cream shop, I probably run 50/50 between bowl and cone. When I do choose a cone, it’s always a wafer cone. At the dining hall and at home, it’s always a bowl. If I lived on my own, it would probably be straight from the carton.
@nottelling they also make fantastic ice cream sandwiches. We are either going to hire their cart or serve their ice cream sandwiches at D’s wedding.
Who the heck decided that a pint of B&J or HD is FOUR servings?? No way!
(and that is why I try not to have ice cream in the house very often)
@psychmomma, yes – Baskin-Robbins chocolate chip – and it is those flakey chips that make it! They use the same chips in the chocolate mint, too. Love them both.
Oldfort- HD Rum Raisin has always been one of my all time favorites. In holiday season, I love to have peppermint stick ice cream.
If I have to have hard ice cream…Mitchell’s is an excellent choice!
But that East Coast Custard! Same recipe as Euclid Beach used…for you NE Ohioans who remember that!! The best!!
@doschicos, Giffords wasn’t always Giffords of Maine. It started in Silver Spring MD and was a local chain in the DC area. It was my post OB visit treat after weigh ins back in the day. Loved their coconut ice cream with swiss chocolate sauce

My nieces and nephews who live near Cincinnatti turned me on to Graeter’s ice cream. Wow–amazing stuff. The company ships it anywhere in the US.
H’s sister sends us 6 pints for Xmas. "
I nearly went into shock a few summers ago when I found Graeter’s on the shelf in a small health-food type store in Nantucket, MA–an island off the coast of Cape Cod. Turns out the owner was originally from Cincinnati.
Most of the time, if I want ice cream, I buy Talenti Mediterranean mint or vanilla bean gelato. I also like HD cherry vanilla. I try to only have it for special occasions.
I grew up in the 60s with a mom who was a health food type–we never had sugar in our house–no soda, juice, or any baked goods. My Dad rebelled and bought us something called spumoni ice cream from an Italian market every other Sunday. I keep looking for something like it but havent found anything.
Another place with great ice cream is Toscanini’s which is in Central Square (right near MIT) in Cambridge, MA.
Happy to see that ice cream is bringing back old memories and still creating new ones!
My first official paying job was at the local dairy in town scooping ice cream. We were known for our enormous sized servings. Some night I would scoop continually for the entire 5 hour shift.
New memory -D2 and I just came back from Italy. Every where we went we checked out the local’s best gelato place. I have to say Yelp was pretty accurate even outside of US. On the other hand, I haven’t had a bad gelato yet.
Old memory - Again, my father was very frugal. He loved ice cream, but he used to buy no brand ice cream. Our kids were used to having HD at home. One day when D1 was only 3 or 4 she went to her grandfather’s house. My dad gave her some ice cream. She took one taste and she said it wasn’t Haagen Dazs ice cream. Every since then, my father would always make sure there was HD in his house for her and he would continue to eat his no brand ice cream (whatever was on sale in the store). Often eating side by side with each other. That’s love for you.
@mominva I think they must have sold the name rights to avoid trademark infringement but the Maine Gifford’s has been around since the 70s.
Speaking of Maine ice cream, Gelato Fiasco out of Brunswick and now also Portland, ME is pretty awesome! They sell it retail, too, even all the way on the West Coast. If you want to give it a try: http://www.gelatofiasco.com/retailers/
Anyone know Kulfi? It’s a traditional Indian ice cream. We’re lucky to have a shop near us that homemakes their ice creams and makes a version of this. Every flavor they make is awesome, but this is my fav. Has pistachio and cardamom.
My favorite is gelato from the Belgian Gelato place in town. Store bought favorites are Talenti (coffee Choc chip and sea salt caramel), HD (all chocolate, coffee and/or caramel flavors) and B&Js (Karamel Sutra).
When I was pregnant with my oldest child, I lived on HD. My H joked that the HD truck stopped delivering to the grocery store and came directly to our house instead.
I LOVE ice cream and gelato. A pint is definitely 1 serving - which is why I can’t buy ice cream as often as I’d like. I have no self control.
