Bromfield, I also grew up in a health food family in the '60s. No sugar, no white flour. But…every Friday my best friend and I got a dime to go the Baskin Robbins around the corner for a cone. Mine-Rocky Road, which is still a favorite, though it certainly is not very common these days. This was Phoenix, so ice cream time was much of the year.
@sabaray: " Candied lemon cardamom in a freshly made waffle cone."
I don’t even really like ice cream, but, holy cow. You had me at ‘cardamom’.
Yep, blue moon surely does (or can, anyway) turn your tongue blue.
If you are ever in Madison, WI, check out Ella’s Deli on East Wash(ington). Aside from being a pretty awesome place for a meal, they have blue moon ice cream.
@Bromfield2 Yes Graeters is legendary! Oprah had it on her list of favorite things one year. The raspberry chip is unbelievable, but it is the only flavor I get from there. I like UDF ice cream better than Graeters except for the raspberry chip. My daughter just turned me on to Talenti butter pecan, yum it was good.
There is a place in Claremont called Augie’s that has amazing ice cream made on the premises. They do something with liquid nitrogen that cools it really fast so it is very creamy. They have flavors like Strawberry Balsamic and I think they had a Chocolate Lavender, too. They also make a killer Lemon Custard. It is called Augie’s Coffee Shop, but they have separate lines for ice cream and coffee drinks.
A. thread. about. ice. cream. :x
In Seattle, Molly Moons is pretty good! One of their stores is located next to Fleet Feet… I guess as a reminder that it takes a 3 mile run fro me to burn off one scoop of Molly’s.
Snoqualmie’s is pretty good as far as grocery store freezer ice cream goes:

For large cartons, Tillamook is hard to beat.

My favorite ice cream dessert is Hula Pie. A mound of mac nut ice cream covered in chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and crushed mac nuts. Amazing! Speaking of mac nuts, HD sells it in their shops in HI. I have never seen the mac nut HD ice cream anywhere outside of HI.
This thread is dangerous!
Häagen-Dazs Dulce de Leche is my favorite from the grocery store. My two favorite ice cream shops are Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in Nashville and Izzy’s Ice Cream in St. Paul. Too late for ice cream tonight, but tomorrow will be great.
Retailers and ice cream shops are going to wonder why their sales will rocket tomorrow. It’s the College Confidential Effect as we all run to stock up…
In the supermarket, I actually read the ingredients label for ice cream. You’d be surprised by what’s in the cheap crap: no milk, no cream. Just soy fillers, oils, and emulsifiers.
For ice cream, I love Ben & Jerry’s strawberry and Breyers butter pecan.
For gelato, I love Venchi chocolate (of course!) and mango.
I want to invest in Ali G’s “ice cream glove”.

I would now like a piece of Hula Pie.
I didn’t know Tillamook made ice cream - only cheese!!!
Whew, I survived reading the thread. I am pre diabetic and got rid of all ice-cream/sorbet a few months ago. Last night after reading the thread, I wasn’t sure if I could go to sleep without running to the store and get some ice-cream.
BG Cherry Garcia and HD Chocolate Peanut Butter - my favorite ice creams. We also like the Breyer’s Vanilla bean ice cream - they sell some flavors with junky ingredients, but that one is “pure”. What I really miss is raspberry frozen yogurt that TASTES like yogurt! (Not the frozen yogurt that tastes like ice cream). We used to get it from Whole Foods Market in the 80’s - it was creamy and tart and oh, so delicious. The DIY soft serve frozen yogurt I have tried from the shops that offer gazillion flavors often taste chalky. They insist on having fat-free yogurt, and that always tastes thin. I want full-fat, tart frozen yogurt!
I’m very fond of ice cream. I like Stewart’s (a NYS brand) because their flavors are made with milk, cream, and other natural ingredients. I like sugar cones, but only eat them once in awhile to limit my fat intake. I have a weakness for chocolate, so my favorite flavor is Death by Chocolate (chocolate ice cream with chunks of chocolate). If I’m not eating it in a cone I’ll get a kiddie scoop and put a tablespoon of chocolate syrup on it. If I’m at home, I’ll make some whipped cream with a touch of vanilla and put a scoop of that on the chocolate syrup and top it off with a tablespoon of walnuts.
I’m impressed that there are so many shops around the country making their own ice cream. I’m going to make it my mission this summer to take some road trips with my two teens and try as many of them as I can. Bellvale Farms (about an hour west of White Plains) has good ice cream and the view alone (they’re on a hill overlooking the valley) is worth the trip. There must be more gems like this.
tonne…
My daughters never quite forgave me for moving them out of blue moon territory. I think my oldest gains 5 pounds every time she visits her in laws, just from binging on it.
I visit my parents in upstate NY just to go to Abbots for frozen custard.
I don’t think anyone’s mentioned Sherman’s yet - based in SW Michigan but they supply to the Chicago area. We’ve been to their home dairy bar in South Haven and had a blast. Blue Moon is one of their mainstays; I love Mackinac Island Fudge. But overall (any place) my go-to is a small hot fudge sundae with mint chip ice cream.
I’m really surprised at this thread. I maybe eat ice cream a couple of times a year. It’s not good for me.
Humphry Slocombe’s Secret Breakfast (made with bourbon & corn flakes) ice cream in San Francisco. For portion control and quality I only buy ice cream at those $pendy foodie ice cream places. I discovered to my dismay on my birthday a year or two ago that due to some lactose intolerance I can only eat one scoop at a sitting.
Tillamook Wild Mountain Blackberry
Also, just about any pineapple/coconut ice cream on Maui
Bourbon and corn flake ice cream - sign me up! Makes me think of Momofuku’s cereal milk.
