Son graduated in '09 now in grad school and this summer in a government internship and then on to finish his degree in the fall and getting married this July; they met the first month of their undergraduate studies. They are in the same field. I am getting ready for the wedding.
And on it goes. Hi to everyone!

Son graduated in 06 and has been working in Information and Technology since then for a company he loves. He was lucky to keep his job as they slashed to the bone while the economy was crashing; they seem to value him. Daughter graduated in 08 and joined Teach for America and is just completing her second year. She’ll teach one more year for sure and is contemplating grad school. I have one in college and one in high school so CC is still relevant in terms of the other forums, but I can’t imagine that I’ll ever stop checking the Parent’s Cafe completely, because the topics are so interesting, the posters so intelligent, and there is always great information to be found. It’s way better than randomly googling for information.

D1 graduated in May with BS in Neuroscience. She is waiting tables until she heads to the Peace Corps, Africa, in January. She plans to return after her 2 years and go to grad school.

Son heading to grad school after 2 years working, shifting fields.

I stay on CC 'cuz some funny & interesting posts on Cafe, to keep learning and helping friends with younger kids, and to follow the paqths of other CCers, whose sons & daughters I’ve grown to “know”.

Oh, yeah…I am still here because, ^^“I stay on CC 'cuz some funny & interesting posts on Cafe, to keep learning and helping friends with younger kids, and to follow the paqths of other CCers, whose sons & daughters I’ve grown to “know”.”^^

DD1 graduated in 1/2007, worked as a consultant for more than 2.5 years, decided she’d like to change focus and location, so she is now on the opposite coast, job hunting.
DS graduated in 5/2007, is working for a large company but is seeking to obtain a government position with better opportunities to advance his career.
DD2 is a rising college senior, spending this summer in an unpaid internship at a non-profit, likes what she’s learning and feels her work is important.

I’m still here, well, because of you all! and maybe we’ll do the grad school thing at some point.

Hola! Old-timers. Glad to read the stories.

My data point is chillaxing (I’m such a hep cat ;)) this summer after graduating Rhodes College. Just fun and frivolity. No work at all. Traveling for a month then to the ranch for a month of sleep. It appears that she plans on arriving at Yale Medical School early, well-rested, and “broke-r than a stepped on light-bulb”.

Oh. As to why I’m still here…can’t afford the therapist. Y’all will just have to do. ;)

This is all so nice to read. I lurked for quite a while before I ever posted, so I know many of you much better than you know me.

Our son graduated last month and has started his research engineer job in a city that is
10 hours by car from home or $500 in air fare from home. Hmph!

He’s planning on grad school in couple of years

I’m still here because there is usually something that makes me laugh or makes me think, a refreshing lack of invective (if the political section is avoided), and how else would I know how to dress if I didn’t have the Dressing Young thread?

Huh. I’m still looking for the “dressing like it’s still 1974” thread.

^^ here because of posts like those ^^^^

D- 2009 Muhlenberg grad- working in Center City Philly, loving city life.
S- 2010-University of Notre Dame Mechanical engineering- starts his career in Chicago early August.

Elleneast, Sorry for typos

I work with adolescents, so its really helpful to read these posts

I am sorry that Benny won’t get to meet Peri, curm

S graduated 3 years ago now, and headed off to China for a year of teaching. That year turned into two, one in a smaller city than Shanghai. He declared himself done with China and returned home to figure out the future. He ended up in Americorps, took the GREs and completed grad school applications, with some good success. But he decided to defer for a year, return to China and focus on the language. He has missed China a great deal. But UC San Diego awaits, after his return next summer.

Book, no apologies necessary. Your post was obviously written in a rush. My grammar and punctuation are consistently bad…even when I focus. :o

All I can say is “Wow.” I read though all of the posts with a lot of interest and am amazed by the diversity - AND SUCCESS - of so many of the grads. But it’s kind of bittersweet that as they embark on careers and grad school and marriages and moves and lots of other things that us parents (many of us anyway) now do feel like the nest is emptier than ever.

kitty56 - My wife was a psych major and worked for a while in the same field as your daughter, supervising a work center for the ARC. After a while it was wearing on her own psyche and she left the field.

ellenmenope - Your daughter’s trajectory sounds like my own - BS in physics, taught for 2 years, then off to grad school for Information Science (sort of the theoretical end of computer science).

calmom - “Grandma!!” Wow - I wish my 40-yr-old son (S#1 - just graduated from law school) would get married. Although, he is now living with “the one,” something he has never said about any of the previous ones.

simba - I can’t believe that your son is now graduated and now into his PhD program. Time ZOOMS by.

Elleneast - triple-wow.

overseas - long-time-no-hear… married?!? (see my note above) - LOL

ShesOnHerWay - how exciting… my wife and son have been to Africa twice and absolutely loved the experiences. Which country will she be in?

curmudgeon - a biker chick in Yale Med School? That’s one smart cookie.

mafool - I know what you mean about distance, but look at it this way… My son lives only 41 miles away (and, SouthJerseyMom, also LOVES city living) - as a matter of fact, if you stand on you tiptoes on my deck and lean out a bit, you can see right up the front range of the mountains to the lights of exactly where he lives - but we see him just about as often as when he lived 1500 miles away. :(

Everyone else - congrats on doing a great parenting job, raising independent kids! :)

My S graduated last year with a degree in English in a flurry of honors and awards. Came home and worked manual labor to save enough money to leave. Quite a reality check! Since he couldn’t whip up the enthusiam for grad school or law school right now, and with the economy not lending itself to career experimentation, he wisely decided to buy himself some reflection time by looking for teaching positions abroad. He is now happily teaching English in South Korea.

1 - Graduated 2009. Teach For America (very challenging). Post-TFA plans very unclear, may well stay in teaching/education policy; consumed with it right now.

2 - Entering final year of college, researching senior thesis, cobbling together employment hours (not enough of them). Wants to get a PhD in his social science field.

Me - What AM I doing here?

Son graduated this year and is headed to UC Santa Barbara for Phd. in condensed matter physics.

He has been sleeping since he graduated :)

I’ve been here nearly 10 years, it’s way better than any of those reality shows for entertainment value, plus there is always the chance to pay it forward.

D1- graduated with a BS & BA, did a MA within an hour of our home- an absolutely wonderful time to reconnect with her as an adult and spend family time together. Now 2 years away from completing a PhD and so far she seems happy, presenting at a ‘big’ conference this month. Lots of little things are going right.

D2- graduated UG, took a year off and worked in medical research whilst applying for med school, she was blessed to get into her #1 choice med school last fall, she starts in August.

d3- graduated in May, got a low paying job in Europe that means she can live there and take language classes and at least not incur any debt for living expenses. Hopefully the fluency will help if she does move on to grad school, plus it is an incredible adventure.

You guys are cracking me up this morning! :D

S1 - class of 2009 - Commissioned as an officer in the Air Force and just began pilot training. He says he is “living the dream”.
