I’m of the era on CC where many of the parents/students I knew of are graduated by now (mine graduated in 2009). I’d like to catch up. So what is your recent grad “kiddo” doing now? Job? Grad School? Military? Couch Potato? 'sup, guys?

Thanks!! And what are you doing still looking at CC?? LOL :)

WildChild graduated a few weeks ago and has kept his law firm paralegal job in Philadelphia until August since we are stuck with the apartment until then so he can live off of his parents for a couple more months! In August we will move him and his cat to Denver to start his post-college career at a major corporation.

Daughter graduated in 2007 and is finishing her 2nd year of grad school at Vanderbilt (M. Divinity). She is a Postulant for the Episcopal Priesthood. She is married and her husband is finishing his 2nd year of (med) residency at Vanderbilt.

I love CC and may never leave! (Since I still have one in grad school, I don’t feel too bad about hanging around)

S graduated from college in May 2008. He was commissioned as an officer in the army in July 2008. He completed officer and branch training, and obtained top security clearance after he graduated from college in order to work in Military Intelligence. He is assigned to a combat unit, and was deployed to Iraq in August 2009. He was recently promoted to 1LT, and he is scheduled to come back to USA (stationed on West Coast) in August 2010! Plans to complete his 4 year service obligation, and then go to graduate school…

(D just graduated from high school last Sunday!!! ;))

Congrats, Sokkermom, MOWC. Sokkermom, I’ve read about your son (from your posts here) and wish him the very best!

Digmedia, didn’t your son graduate from USC?

My son worked for about 22 months after graduation. The company he worked for, a small start-up, went under recently; mostly because of bad business decisions. So he is working occasionally but mostly not working. He is going back to graduate school full time in the Fall.

What am I doing on CC? I started back on CC when son applied to grad school and haven’t left since. I’m not sure when I will leave either.

1sokkermom ~ congratulations on both graduations and our deepest gratitude to your son for his service!

MOWC ~ always enjoyed your posts about WC and learned a lot! Congratulations on his graduation!

My D graduated in 2006, kind of she knew what she wanted, took additional classes leading to different careers, worked at a variety of jobs and has returned to the one she loved most. That is with the mentally/physically challenged adult population, even though she took a large cut in pay from another job. She is very happy working with this group.

S1 graduated '07 worked for 2 years and just completed his first year of law school. He is in a joint JD/MUP (urban planning) program, so he’s safely in school for the next 3 years.

S2 graduated '09 and is working as a receptionist (yes, with a 4yr college degree) in a field where he hopes to move up soon to an assistant position. It has nothing to do with what he studied, but it’s a field he would like to continue in and one that has notoriously low paid entry level positions. He is earning a paycheck nonetheless and moved out as of last March. Grad school, maybe someday.

S1 is working full time in his chosen field, but for not much money. Living at home and banking nearly all of his meager paycheck, which is fine with me as long as he’s making headway on his career.

Wow. These stories are great to hear. Thanks from me also to 1sokkermom’s son. My son graduated from Ohio University in 2009. He’s living in Denver and is self-employed, doing visual effects for the film industry. The last film he did all of the vfx for just debuted at Cannes: [url=<a href="'AGT: The Champions,' 'World of Dance' Renewed at NBC - Variety; Analysis Of The Film Kaboom/url. He is also playing hard. He just announced to me that his final ski trip (last weekend) was his 43rd of the season.

My daughter graduates on Sunday from Otterbein College. She’s spending the summer at home (no job at our request, even though she had one lined up…we want her to focus on resting, recharging and maybe even cleaning her room). In August, she heads to Michigan State where she’ll be starting work on her PhD in cultural anthropology.

S graduated in 09 and has put together a combination of jobs in his field (live sound) where he does office work/system installation by day and gigs by night/weekend. If you’re in Chicago for BluesFest this weekend, look for him behind the sound board at Buddy Guy’s!

His younger sister introduced me to CC and it’s been a great resource for both her and my youngest, who graduates HS this week. I’m sure I can leave, though. Just one more message. Really. Just one more… :)

D, class of 2008, doesn’t really know what she wants to do yet with her life. She majored in physics, but doesn’t want to do physics research or graduate work. Luckily, she took 3 computer classes in college and is working full time as a software design engineer. Until she figures out what direction she wants to go in and what it will take to get there, I expect her to continue on the path she’s going.

But I can’t complain–she is self supporting and having a great time in life.

Ellemenope, I agree…I almost wish I were the one going to school in her place. She’s a bit of an academic omnivore, so cultural anthro is a good fit; it allows her to explore her interests in Islam, disability studies, and women’s studies under a larger umbrella. And her advisor seems to share many of her not-for-a-degree interests (film and music in particular), so I’m hopeful that this will be a positive and productive relationship.

Both my kids ended up as poli sci majors and are employed full time. My son graduated from a CSU in 2008 and now works in Seattle, is recently married and the father of a beautiful baby boy. (I’m way too young to be a grandma… but I’m a fast learner, so I’m doing o.k. in that department).

My d. graduated from Barnard in May, was hired for a job in NY the day she graduated, and just started her “dream job” this week… so all is well. (though a teensy bit sad for me as I realize that my nest is truly empty and my offspring have flown far away… though my d. has done so much world traveling that NY doesn’t seem all that “far” from the west coast any more).

D just first year MM in vocal performance. She has been making money teaching and has at least one professional gig a month. (this week she has two? woooo!$) Just got offered a lead role in an opera this summer, after they lost their mezzo and word got out that D was available. Strangely enough, even in this economy, a living can be made in music and we are all very encouraged.
I’ve tried to break the CC habit. But since it’s not fattening and only occasionally immoral
I am just going to stay hooked.

itstoomuch, thisoldman, and longprime’s son graduated BS, then to MS, then 3 internships that took him to India, Germany, and Redmond, plus to chance to tour Europe and India. Now in Seattle as parttime robotics entrepreneur and parttime mechanical/compsci staff engineer, helping grad students on their projects at Udub.

mezzomom, Disability studies? I’d be interested to know more specifics (feel to PM if you’re comfortable), as my research is. broadly, on psychology in the context of disability.

May 2010 grad here.

I’m continuing my RA job at my undergrad university until the end of July at which point I’ll spend a week at home and then head off to grad school (PhD program) over 1200 miles away from where I did my undergrad.

Specifically, I’m working on a bunch of manuscript for journal articles and also on the implementation of the pilot study for one of our large grant projects. I’m hoping to get two first author manuscripts submitted before I leave (my thesis and a review I’m taking the lead on) as well as 3-4 others (one’s done and being proofed and submitted next week and another’s a revise and resubmit–the other two are final papers from a grant that’s ending this fall) submitted within the same time frame, but who knows if that will actually work out time-wise? I’m also hoping to get some work done on an independent project–I have the data–if I can find the time!

I’m also just enjoying seeing friends before heading off to grad school!

DD1 graduated in 2009 from Mizzou with a double major in Sociology and Political Science, and spent a year with Teach for America in Baton Rouge. She did well, but it was not for her. This coming year she will be teaching english in Japan, and then plans on law school for environmental law.

DD2 is a junior at Grand Valley State in Michigan, hospitality and tourism major. She did the Disney College program last year, and was accepted for study abroad next year at Kingston University in England.

It seems like all the kids on this thread are doing well, especially with the challenging economy.

DD graduated in 2007, got an MPhil in Medical Anthropology at Oxford (an amazing two years) and is finishing up her first year of medical school at her undergrad alma mater, Columbia. She will probably continue her medical anthropology studies when she does a research project associated with her medical school program…she has debated taking that to the PhD level.

Full time employment is waaaaay down the road. But eventually…someday…she will have a job. :)
