Anyone know at what point a retailer would have the right to alter the final price you pay? Just ordered? Ordered with a deposit? Ordered with full payment made? Delivered?
If the sales tax rate changes when you are buying something like a car, then don’t you have to execute the contract and make payment before the deadline? Could a retailer do likewise for a new tariff? I suppose that if the goods have already been imported then the tariff won’t apply retrospectively, only when they restock?
At Audi dealership yesterday, the salesman did say that if an a car was ordered now-ish but tarrifs were somehow quickly enacted while waiting for delivery…. we’d need to pay it. But there would be option to cancel the deal.
The dealer would unlikely to be able to cancel the order - but a customer can until they take purchase.
Some dealers will hit you with non refundable deposits, especially with tough to sell colors/specs that they built only for you.
But in many states, that’s often a mechanism to scare you into being 100% in on your order as many states don’t allow dealers to keep deposits on incomplete deals.
In this case, the risk is on the dealer but if it’s a highly saleable spec they won’t have concern.
Depending on the price point, a tariff isn’t going to be a deal blocker. Maybe on a $40k car but if one can spend $80k, they’ll spend $82k etc.
Or the manufacturer will up dealer incentives (that you’ll never know about if buying from a luxury brand). Then the dealer can hold your pruce if you threaten to leave. Everyone at this point will spend what they need as inventories are bloated and dealers are saying no more. The manufacturer cannot sustain that because they make their money selling to the dealer, not you. So a dealer saying no more is cause for panic, which gets the manufacturer to open the purse strings.
Seems like “tough to sell” car specs are often no longer offered. I.e. things like manual transmissions, colors other than grayscale, red, or blue, one high end option but base otherwise, non-huge wheels, small car, etc.
Yea to stick. Lots of colors avail, some at a cost. Today you have more flat colors but also metallics. But that’s brand dependent.
Tons of options still available but many OEMs have cut end items to simplify manufacturing - meaning you may have been able to get heated seats b4 for $600 but now it’s part of a $2k package with other things you don’t want.
I was a product manager on one car where we were instructed to reduce orderable combinations from 250-ish to 45.
As an architect, I’d strongly advise against buying Chinese drywall. Actually, most drywall is made in the U.S. Drywall from China is cheaply made(no surprise there) and has been used by some builders looking to save a buck. Many homeowners are now having to replace all of the Chinese drywall as it emits toxic gases and can be harmful to your health.
Wine! Red wine, and lots of it! Just because I live in Washington state doesn’t mean the price of red wine isn’t going up. Oh well, nice try. I’m sure we’ll still be able to get great wine for $10.
