What kind of bike is best for UCSD?

I don’t know anything about bikes but I’m planning of buying one before my move to UCSD. DO you have any suggestions? As of now I’m looking at Hybrid bikes but what is the difference, really?

Bike with gears>>>>>>>bike without gears. That’s the most important part.

Yeah definitely get one with gears; the nearby street Gilman Dr is arguably quite hilly in certain areas (esp. near the Village Square shopping complex), and would be difficult to climb seamlessly without gears. Unless you’re Lance Armstrong of course.

Where are you planning on getting the bike?

Hey Oliver_Twist! I seriously have no idea about bikes. I’m looking it up online but I don’t know what to look for and what not. I might just go tomorrow at Target and see for my self. Is it better to get a Hybrid?

^I got my bike at Target for pretty cheap and it’s a comfort/hybrid type. It works great. I really don’t know that much about bikes either but anything at Target marked as comfort (assuming it has gears) or hybrid is pretty much what you’re looking for, meaning you don’t have to get an expensive road bike or anything like that.

Hi! Yeah in addition to Target (where I got mine as well, a decade ago), Craigslist San Diego may have some used one(s) for cheaper. I’m not sure if hybrid is the best as I don’t know much about bikes other than that gears are almost necessary for hilly areas. Above all I’d make sure you’re comfortable on it, this is #1. If it’s at Target, perhaps try riding it around in the store – who cares if anyone objects or gives you weird looks, they’re boring people.

Oh also I came across this: [Bicycling Programs](http://sustainability.ucsd.edu/initiatives/cycling.html), it looks like UCSD even offers bike rentals for students, in case you don’t want to buy/own one!

I definitely rode mine around the store. :)

it’s pretty much impossible to ride your bike during the school day- alot of the major walkways you’re not even allowed to ride your bike in.

When living on campus I ONLY used my bike after 6 pm to ride from sixth dorms to Rimac.

If you are investing in new stuff to take to college- don’t waste it on a bike. Just take an old one from your garage. Then once you get there in September you can decide to buy a new bike or not---- there’s a decent bike shop on campus and a good bike shop by Ralphs.

and yes there are some big hills but none of my friends or I had a problem getting up them on our old bikes.

Wow. Very helpful guys! Thanks a lot!

after going around campus the first 2-3 months, i decided to get a mountain bike with gears, of course. like the others have mentioned, the walkways get pretty crowded when people go in and out of class. i figured that a mountain bike will allow me to go through rough terrain that a road bike wouldnt be able to do and thus let me get to places faster, even if it is crowded. and a mountain bike does the job well with the hilly terrain on campus. hope this helps.
