what kind of blanket?

OK, I have another kind-of dumb question about blankets. My son is going to a school in a warmer climate than where we live, but not scorching hot or crazy humid. Just the sort of place where you might get one or two light snows in winter and where spring comes early. He says he will not need a down comforter, and I believe him (don’t know if dorm has AC or not).

What do people get in terms of blankets? I am talking the kind of people (like everyone else in my family besides me) who does not like to use a top sheet? Something that is washable but not too scratchy and not as heavy as a down comforter? What to get??

Thank you!

[edit: yes, I think the dorm will have AC]

Light weight thermal?

A light weight cotton comforter or quilt. Many stores sell them. I like the quality of the Company Store.

Washable.

Light blanket.
If it gets colder than anticipated then I open up my sleeping bag( for overnight guests and sleeping out for tix) and use as a comforter…

microfleece or down blankets from BB&B.

See if you can find out how hot the dorms are kept in winter–my kids have had to keep windows wide open in January to counteract overheated rooms. You may find that a top sheet option is worth having. I doubt a down comforter will be necessary or even desirable–too bulky and probably too hot. It’ll be on the floor 90% of the time.

I remember seeing down blankets in a catelog - maybe Company Store. (they are thinner than comforters)

My kids have had a couple of DIY polar fleece blankets they love-- two big pieces of polar fleece in complementary prints or colors, then cut and knotted together-- You can do school colors, etc etc and even embroidery. they’re not “real” blankets, and I find them kind of dorky-- but the great thing is that they are so easy to clean-- they dry super super fast and therefore can be laundered really easily.

I tried to link an image but I’m too tech-challenged. Google “knotted polar fleece blanket”.

DD went to a school where it never snowed, but nights in the winters got into the low 40’s. She took a very light weight comforter…not down. She felt a synthetic was easier to wash and take care of…and it was something we already had. It was perfect, was machine washable, and was just right. The dorm did have AC but the students were able to control the temps.

I would recommend something synthetic, washable, and easily replaceable. I saw many residents get blankets ruined by vomit, roommates, sharpies, puffy paint, that time of the month, you name it.

Love or hate Walmart, my fiance and I both own this blanket (in different colors).

It’s surprisingly soft, warm but not too warm, and perhaps most importantly, it holds up well to washing. No problem washing and drying it in the campus machines. Plus it is inexpensive!

Thank you for these great suggestions! I do like the Company Store, so will be sure to look there. I think I will send him with two - a blanket as well as a comforter so he can choose depending on the weather. Thanks again!

Lbowie… I would, suggest you send ONE blanket with him with a plan to order and ship,a second one IF needed. If the climate is mild, you could also send the warmer blanket at thanksgiving. There isn’t storage space in most dorm rooms so,all blankets you send will be on his bed.

Any chance he could get his blanket someplace near the college once he gets there?

I love Company Store also, but for a college student dorm I would not spend that kind of money!

Good point. His room will be small. Yes, he will be able to take the bus to a mall. Or he can mail order something.

Overstock carries lightweight, down alternative blankets, (not comforters). Should be warm enough for a cool night or a dorm that has a low temperature setting for air conditioning.

I was going to suggest down or down alternative blankets or even a comforter. They are great all year bed coverings. In the winter we combine ours with our duvet cover and in the summer we use just the comforter. It’s lightweight and gives just the right amount of warmth without being overly hot.
