What kind of music do you guys like?

Err…I never said Bright Eyes was ska…its an emo band. Conor Oberst is my opinion of possibly the worst and most annoying vocalilst for any band ever. Any don’t you have anything better to do than flame our music tastes? :</p>

Bright Eyes is not an emo band. Emo= Rites of Spring and Fugazi.

Anyway, to the music elitist: I can be one too. We can sit here all day talking about Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Gorilla Biscuits, and any other good 80s hardcore bands that you probably don’t know anything about. It’s pretty ridiculous to pass judgments upon people you don’t even know. Good music is good music. The Killers are a fun band. However, it’s still possible to listen to The Killers and MC5.

Thanks for playing.

Bright Eyes is a misnomer. That is the irony of the “band”. Conor oberst is the sole creative talent, and as soon as he sees fit for the joke to end, he will consider himself a solo act. If you were to categorize him, as of the moment Oberst would be described as a politically satirical songwriter, a poet similar to that of Bob Dylan. As for my own opinion of him, I feel that he has the gift of wit, and a voice that can send shivers down spines. He is just another talented singer/songwriter, highly outclassed by some of his contempories, most notably Elliot Smith (R.I.P.).

Hardcore…hardcore?? The only decent band ever attached to the tagline, “hardcore”, is Half-Japanese, the brainchild of Jad Fair. Oh wait…maybe YOU don’t know who he is. So, in that case, please do yourself a favor and stop trying to teach the teacher. But, since I’m in a good mood, I’ll give you some more suggestions. Seeing that you love the 80’s so much, check out Daniel Johnston and Dinosaur Jr. Hardcore…pathetic.

The reason I waste my time “flaming” you children on an internet message board dedicated to the college application process…well, there is no logical reason except for the fact that I hate how incredibly pretentious human beings can be. Due to the gift of anonymity, I can disregard any social responsibilites such as a courtesy, manners and the fear of hatred between whom I address and myself. You should also take advantage, and simply accept what I have to say, and perhaps even acquire a decent taste for music. For my children, although you may and should feel embarassed, this is simply an opportunity to better yourselves, as provided by kind ol’ me.

Your welcome.

Congratulations, you win the “indier than thou” prize. How many hours a day do you spend on allmusic.com trying to find bands that no one’s ever heard of? Music taste is subjective. Good Charlotte sucks, but if someone chooses to like them then it’s their business, not yours. You are not educating me in the slightest, because I would rather listen to sincere bands like Verse, 7 Seconds, and Lifetime than your pretentious, hipster music.

Also, it’s “you’re welcome,” not “your welcome.”

You shouldn’t flame kids just cuz they have poor taste in music. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions of music… Jesus Christ, no one cares if you think others have bad musical taste. Seriously.

Obviously YOU care, if YOU feel the need to reply. So, don’t try going down the high road, little buddy. You’ve already chosen the low, without knowing it.

Now then, I suggested you listen to The Kinks, The VU and The Smiths, the three best bands of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Seeing how these bands had mass appeal in their times, and are still well known, that hardly classifies as “indie.” Indie music is a relative term that has become foggier over the past two years within the industry. So, to say that tastes suggest an air of “indier than thou”, is completely false and indeed libel. However, you did catch my gramatical error, and I commend you for that, despite the fact that you are a dork.

Good luck with expanding your musical tastes. You need it.

I don’t feel like prolonging this “argument” (or what have you), so I will be brief. I like everything from Elvis Costello to Cap’n Jazz to Ten Yard Fight to John Coltrane–I’m content with what I listen to, and I enjoy discovering new artists every day. However, I don’t need your help. Also, I’d like to point you in the direction of Refused, whose album The Shape of Punk to Come is probably one of the most innovative albums you will ever hear. Check it out sometime. They draw a lot from Ornette Coleman, whose album The Shape of Jazz to Come broke all of the rules in the be-bop and cool jazz scenes when it came out. Don’t tell me what to listen to.

Also, I know who The Kinks, The Smiths, and The Velvet Underground are.

Morrissey, The smiths, The cure, depeche mode, and joy division. And as for spanish: heroes del silencio, enanitos verdes, and jaguares

Classic rock is my fav.

I’m thinking of expanding my musical tastes and I was hoping you guys could help me. For those of you into classic rock (andrew, porsche, vices, Smeds) could you recommend me some lesser known classic rock bands that I would like? I’m really into Queen, Led Zeppelin, U2, Rush, Tom Petty, The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, RHCP, Pink Floyd, etc… I’m always open to suggestions. Thanks =]

Folk/Folk Rock/Oldies/Some Hip Hop/Anything fun and not completely studio produced
I’m a journalism major hoping to one day become a music journalist.
Everyone should check out the Mountain Goats. Awesome awesome awesome.

Meehan: I don’t want to major in journalism (I’d like to go to grad school for it), but I too want to be a music journalist.

I’m not really into classic rock, but I can give you some bands to check out that you might like. If you’re into anything psychedelic, definitely check out The Mars Volta, who are sort of a modern-day prog/psychedelic type of band. They are ex-At The Drive-In, and they just released their second full-length album. It’s really, really crazy, far-out stuff, with influences ranging from simple classic rock to jazz to Latin and beyond. Definitely worth checking out.

Other than that, you should check out some folkier stuff like Iron and Wine, The Arcade Fire, and The Decemberists.

Sorry I can’t really help on the classic rock though.

I was just putting in my two cents. I listen to everything you listed. Thanks though. I’m not sure who was asking for suggestions.

I probably should have addressed the rec. part to asdfTT123 to originally asked me. Sorry about the misunderstanding.
