what kind of physics is needed on the MCAT?

non-calc based.

is E/M needed, or is it just mechanics?

Everything covered in your intro series of physics.

okay so there are two courses:

1) Introduction to forces, kinetics, equilibria, fluids, waves, and heat.

2) Introduction to electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic waves, optics, and modern physics.

do i absolutely need both or will the first suffice? what if i plan on taking MCAT classes as well?

Both. Some on here will say that if you have a strong high school physics background, that and mcat physics review will suffice for mcat physics, but that’s a call you have to make on your own.

My physics professor was horrible, so when I was reviewing for the MCAT, it was like everything but mechanics was new material for me anyway. The Kaplan books did a great job of explaining everything. But somehow someway, either with classes or with books or with classes, you need to learn all of those topics.

Sorry for any typos, I’m drunk.
