What kind of scholarships, academic, leadership, talent, etc.?

My d and I recently visited Pace. To our surprise we were encouraged by many factors. One of course that it has a BFA in MT and the acceptance rate is much higher than those in Fl. we have looked into. The person that gave us the tour talked alot about scholarships. She eluded to that fact that by writing essays and explaining things such as being a “bad test taker” given why the SAT wasn’t that high of a score, or financial need, the school was very forthcoming with monies.

I would like to know from any parents or fellow students what kind of scholarships and amounts could expect or at least ask for. Such as Academic Merit, Leadership Merit, Talent, Need Based, etc. Pace is private and I understand because of it’s alumni and history of scholarship funds available, that getting $$ is attainable. We will be coming in from out of state, living in the city is a bonus for my D.

As compared to other threads I have read about NYU …because of the approximate$52K/yr, they just do not offer enough. If we had to pay $20-$25 out of Pocket, well let’s put it this way, we never could.

Also, can someone explain to me what the abbreviation EFC means? I think it is some kind of total based on the FAFSA but I am not clearly understanding.

Thank you

EFC stands for Expected Family Contribution. The EFC is the amount of money your family will be expected to contribute to you/your child’s education. The EFC is subtracted from the school’s Cost of Attendance (COA) to arrive at your financial need: Financial Need = COA - EFC. The COA includes tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies, travel, and personal and incidental expenses.
Hope this helps!

My son was accepted into the Honors College and given a merit scholarship based on academics. I don’t have the paperwork in front of me, but I believe it was $15,000 each year for tuition plus a $2000 room credit for each year he lived in Pace housing.

Thanks perischack and austinmom for the information. So perischack then if he recieves a total of $17K per yr. then your out of pocket is around $25K? How does anyone afford that?

if you are considering NYU and just not applying because of financial things heard on here, you should still at least apply and take the chance that things may work out well. One boy on here got a full ride a couple weeks ago and I have had a couple friends get significant finaid from them, which was a nice surprise for them! Also, Pace’s tuition total is around $48,000 which isn’t that big of a difference from NYU. Pace also gives finaid based on GPAs, too. I received a Dean’s Scholarship of $12,000 per year and a Pace grant of $6,000 a year, and I heard that there are 2 or 3 scholarships academically that are above the Dean’s Scholarship so you could potentially get more $ from them. I did not get admitted to their MT program, but I had a friend who did that got a significant scholarship from them that made tuition very affordable, and also if your daughter gets more money from other schools she can always use that for some finaid leeway with different programs in order to try and get more money, that’s what my friend did and the other school he chose on met his scholarships dollar for dollar.

Mom at home, presumably it is not a surprise that our children will be starting college later this year, so I imagine that many of us have been planning and saving for some time. Of course, with many investment accounts being hit hard over this last economic downturn, even the best laid plans may prove to be insufficient.

In addition to what families put aside to pay for education, many take loans either for themselves or in their children’s names (or both). And we all probably tighten our belts a little bit more, forgo vacations for a while, whatever it takes.

Is it easy? For most of us, no. We are solidly middle class, living in a very expensive part of the country, and qualify for NO need-based financial aid. On paper, we look great, I suppose, but I start twitching every time I think about the upcoming tuition bills! Still, I’m confident that we won’t starve. And if I drive my old car for a couple of more years instead of leasing a new one, everyone will survive.

Besides, I’m winning the MegaMillions Lottery soon. I just know I am.

LOL
