DS called me this morning in a panic. Seems on the way to a ski weekend, in February, he got a speeding ticket. NJ State Police. 15 miles over the speed limit. That part’s OK.

So he was going through a “pile of papers” (don’t ask) this morning and, uh oh there’s the ticket. He forgot about it, as apparently did his gf who was with him. Never paid it, consequently missed the court date. Tried to pay online today, can’t.

He lives in NYC, doesn’t own a car. This was a rental. He’s worried this’ll affect current credit or background search, as he’s in the process of applying for new apartment, present lease is almost up. What kind of trouble is he in? If he doesn’t carry insurance, can he still get points? Will this affect future attempts to rent a car? My thought is, all they want is his money…perhaps a lot at this point but oh well, it’s a learning experience. He’ll be on the phone first thing in the morning.

This is a really good kid. Demanding job, does well. Ahh, this parenting never ends…

Contact with a NJ attorney might smooth the process. Your local attorney can find someone locally who will know what to do in the relevant county. Good luck.

Yes, contact an attorney in NJ. He was likely given a FTA (failure to appear) - which may mean that not only will he pay a fine for the ticket but also for the failure to respond in a timely manner. A call to the clerk’s office where the motor vehicle tickets are presented for that area might also provide you with some guidance. Most courthouses have lawyer referral programs which will direct you to a member of the local bar that handles motor vehicle infractions. Do not worry - it is not the end of the world - just be proactive. DS may have to open any judgment that entered in order to contest the ticket - if he intends to go that route.

You may want to see if an attorney can re open the case. Vacate the FTA if thats what he got. If you are already going to the expense of an atty, he may be able to plea bargain down the speed. Otherwise your insurance will likely go up/
