My brother is what i call REALLY SMART. He went to Howard University, where he just graduated summa cum laud (3.92 GPA) after 3.5 years. He received his B.A. degree in Political Science (in a Pre-Law track) and a minor in Sociology.
He just got back his LSAT scores, where he scored a 165 out of 180. I’m trying (and the rest of my family) to convince him to apply to Harvard or Yale Law School. Do you think he can get into either? So far he has only applied to Georgetown, University of Chicago, UCLA and Stanford. And if this helps, im sure he said something about going into labor/employment law.

You may want to take this question to the Law School Forum. You can reach it by clicking on “Discussion Home” in the upper left of this screen and then scrolling down. You’ll find it near the other grad school forums.

What is his ethnicity? (Howard does have some white students.)

At this late date, however, the deadlines for Harvard and Yale have expired. If he wants to apply, he will have to apply next year.

While the 3.92 is great, a 165 is not going to get him into Harvard or Yale unless he is an under-represented minority. More likely he should be looking at the schools in the 25-40 range on the US News rankings.

dter: you’re absolutely right unless race is a factor here, which is probable given that he went to Howard.

bluedevilmike: you’re right, I just glanced at the guy’s post history and he mentions that he himself is a URM. His brother might have a decent shot at both.

yes, my brother is an URM.

Well, that still leaves major questions. Specifically, the deadlines for Harvard and Yale have lapsed. Is he willing to wait until next year to apply?

Second, of course, even under the “URM” umbrella, different races receive different treatment. He’s at a HBU, of course, but that doesn’t necessarily tell us what race he is.

I would suggest your brother take the LSAT again- if he can get a 170 or greater (only 5 points) he would have a really great chance at Harvard or Yale.

Regardless, a 3.92, 165, URM has a decent shot at most T14s.

Retake is probably unnecessary.

he wants to take off a year before law school to work in the public/ non-profit sector… As far as re taking the LSAT that is something that he is weighing over.

His GPA is where it should be, he has URM, the only thing holding him back is his LSAT. I think he would have a lock on most midrange t14 schools if he could improve his score by a few points

People are underestimating the impact of URM here. He has a decent shot at HYS and a very good shot everywhere else. Being a black male is huge. If your brother doesn’t get into Stanford, he should take a year off and apply to HYS on down.

There is a URM on TLS that got into Stanford with a 163 LSAT score today, didn’t post gpa.
