Following are my stats

BA UCLA GPA 3.0 Major International Development
MA San Francisco State GPA 3.8 Major Ethnic Studies
LSAT 163

Work experience: Americorp and various non-profit agencies working with minorities and underpriveleged children.

Any guidance would be very helpful

P.S. Are Berkeley and Columbia out of the question??

hey tara786, sorry im not replying to your post, but i was just wondering what kinda job opportunities were available to you with the ucla IDS major, cuz thats one of the majors that im considering. thanks

The low end of the range of GPA’s and LSAT’s accepted by these law schools are:
Berkeley 3.68 and 161; Columbia: 3.5 and 166

Hi
Most of the job opportunities with the IDS major are with non-profit agencies. A number of my colleagues went to Bihar, India through a dept/or semi official program to work with women and children there. I joined Americorp and worked with literacy programs…Hope this helps

Given that there are about 200 law schools - could you give us a rough idea of where you would like to work (geographically)?

I am thinking about law schools in California, New York or Boston. Hope that narrows down the field. I guess mostly what I am asking is if my post graduate grades or work experience and LSAT scores will help me overcome my 3.0 GPA to get into a prestigious law school.

Thanks

New York: Fordham would be a reach/match - but is a really good school and would help you get a job in NYC. Brooklyn and Cardozo would be good matches. Maybe Hofstra for a match/safety. Also - Pace, New York Law School (not NYU L.S.) would be good safeties.

Boston: BC and BU are reaches for you. Of the half-dozen Boston law schools (Harvard, BC, BU, Suffolk, New England School of Law, Western New England, and one other), Suffolk would be the best for a safety. While it is ranked this year as a fourth-tier school, it’s usually ranked as third-tier and has a good reputation in Boston (better than NE and WNE). Realize that Boston has a relatively small legal market and that Harvard churns out 550 law school grads every year - Harvard gets first crack at the jobs, and the leftovers go to BC and then BU. In some bad years, even BC grads will have a tough time finding employment.

Columbia might be possible - but, given that neither your LSAT nor your GPA is within their median 50%, it’s probably not going to happen. If your LSAT were in the 170s, you might have a really good chance.
