I’m currently a freshman at UC Berkeley. So either next semester or in fall, I might take some Japanese courses. I’m really not sure where my level stands though. I’ve gotten a 5 on the AP exam, and I’ve passed the JLPT at level 3 in the old format. I just want an idea of around what level I should expect to take.

take jap 1 if u want an A and care about ur gpa. no matter how much you know.

Some people actually want to learn something, rather than repeat what they learned for empty A grades.

From the above web site:

Also, language teachers oftentimes will kick you out if your level of proficiency/fluency is too high for the course, in order to prevent native speakers or whoever from taking the introductory level course for an easy A. So I would definitely suggest taking the online test to assess what level you should be in, and email the department for any further questions.

Yeah comments like these are why no sane person should sympathize with you coming on here everyday and whining about how much of a hard time you’re having . . . .

Maybe if you ever actually cared about . . . you know . . . learning and pursuing what you’re interested in, you wouldn’t be constantly complaining about how hard and stressful school is?

I’m not concerned about whether or not I can get an easy grade. It’s just that I passed JLPT 3, which is in the old format of the test. Now, with the new format, it is equivalent to JLPT N4, which tests you out of Japanese 10B. What I’m wondering is if I can skip out of the 10 series and head straight for the 100 series, even if it’s an old test. Also, I’m wondering if AP does anything for me.

If JLPT 3 = JLPT N4, then it would appear from the placement guidelines that 100A is the recommended course. Try the placement tests and ask the department if you have further questions.

lol yeah I guess you’re right caiacs. I’m working on it. I think I just need a break to figure out this IS really what I want to be doing. because right now…it sure is just going to class and hating that I have to wake up every morning to know that this is my life.
