Running
Swimming outside in the winter (heated pool)
When the big cat slips into bed next to me at night, purring
The toy that my dog has in his mouth when I come home from work - because that’s EXACTLY what I needed.
We put out nuts and seeds and I love to watch the scrub jays, finches, juncos and doves in our backyard, along with the squirrels.
I’m with you on that one, guidedbywire, except substitute cutthroat for brookie out here.
Having been more or less snowed in, today I finally said tough it, I’m going out. And I bundled up in athletic layers and went to a park to walk. But it was so cold, so I ran. Then I walked, then I ran. Felt really good out there and feels really good NOW
Central heat, space heaters, humidifiers, a reliable vehicle, garage door opener, when the sun shines through my back windows and warms up my kitchen and living room, pots of soup, cups of tea, hot showers, and anything else that is keeping me comfortable during this bitter cold winter. As I always say to my kids, “We live better than kings!”
(Most kings in history, that is…)
Don’t forget indoor plumbing!
Indoor plumbing is NOT a little thing.
Rediscovering a book I read or a film I watched years ago, and seeing it through different eyes now.
Eggplant. In any recipe, from any culture.
The Zits comic strip. Every morning.
Actually succeeding in getting either of my kids on the phone.
Seeing the mountains outside my window every morning.
Reading the newspaper while eating breakfast every morning.
A cup of tea and a good book.
Fresh flowers, especially roses.
My cat sitting beside me or on my lap purring.
Singing in a women’s chorus.
Playing mahjong with friends.
Texts from my kids, Skyping with my kids, but especially seeing them in person.
The first sit of the summer on our cottage beach when I look around and say, “this is what I waited all winter for”.
Good queso and spicy salsa.
New, white, high-thread count sheets.
When my 15-month-old niece kisses me for no reason.
Nice, thick stationery.
Seeing the mergansers diving to the bottom of the creek for the cracked corn my 91-year-old dad scatters.
The change of the birds with the change of the seasons.
The little dance my dog does when she wants something.
That spot on my favorite hiking trail where the road sounds disappear and all I hear is nature.
Hanging my laundry outside.
Playing a saved voicemail of my father singing to me.
Clean sheets
Naps
Having an hour of alone time to read the paper on Sunday morning
Getting up at 4am in the morning (that doesn’t bring me joy), going to the hotel lobby to catch the van to work and they have fresh Starbucks coffee, with real cream. Usually at that early hour, you are sentenced to hotel room coffeemaker crappy coffee with the fake stuff. Joy!
My almost daily walk up the back path along the creekside.
Sitting next to my two old snoozing kitties on the couch (as I’m doing now).
A caprese salad with a perfect tomato.
Seeing rabbits eating my grass while I am eating breakfast.
Seeing pheasants perching on my fence.
Finding a bird nest.
Looking at the king palm tree I plant myself.
Flannel sheets in an air conditioned room in the subtopics (I miss Maine winter and seasons).
The guy/gal at Chickfila that says “my pleasure” - makes me smile.
New spring growth - it’s such a bright kelly green, you never see it again until next spring.
Cherry blossoms
Robins, bluebirds, hawks
Deer everywhere in the neighborhood
A good pedicure
kayaking alone in adirondacks, seeing and hearing a loon, hearing crickets at night, seeing the first fireflies in summer
OH one more, actually my favorite but it only lasts a few weeks - in the fall when the sun starts setting early and the sunlight filters through the tree leaves before they have fallen and makes dancing shadows.
