What looks better on my transcript?

I am thinking about changing my schedule my senior year to try and appeal most to UC Berkeley’s admission officers. Currently, here is what it is

 1. AP English
 2. AP Physics
 3. AP Statistics
 4. Free
 5. Free
 6. Journalism
 7. AcDec

I want to drop AcDec and get a job instead, because 1) if I’m enrolled in AcDec, I do not plan to be on the team 2) my parents both lost their jobs and “supporting the family” might be more appealing than taking some AcDec class. What’s your guys’ opinion? My school also requires that I take 5 classes to still be a student, so if I did drop AcDec, I’d probably just take up Newspaper Production (which is any period).

Colleges understand that you need to support your family. Do what you need to do to stay afloat. Don’t take AcDec if you don’t want to. I’m sure Newspaper would look about the same.

I agree with the above.

It might also benefit you to fill your free periods – you seem to have only 3 academic classes.

I think you should want to support your family (if it’s necessary) because you want to, not because it might look good to admissions officers.

You don’t seem to have too much going on in terms of academics. No foreign language? No history or social studies?

I’ve completed 3 years of Spanish. And I forgot to add my 2nd semester class for 4th) AP Gov

This summer, I took AP Econ at a Junior College.

By the way, is AcDec really look that good to admission officers? My teachers keep pushing it in my face saying it’s so great and such… My top school is Berkeley.

It looks good, but it’s not amazing. But just remember: in Berkeley’s eyes, GPA, essays, and rigor of course load are considered the most important.

My GPA is pretty “high” - 4.66… Still need to work on essays though. Anyhow, anyone else have advice?

4.66 out of 4?

That’s pretty good.

I don’t really even know what AcDec is and if it is Academic Decathlon like I think it is, then yeah it sounds more like an extracurricular not as something you should be taking as a class. Sounds ridic. That’s just like taking student government as a class. I, too, would advise taking another year of a language. That looks the best. Could you take AP Spanish for the first semester of 4th period and AP Govt second semester 4th period?

AP Spanish is a year class at our school, so I doubt it. Would it be beneficial for me to take Gov 1st semester, since the college would see I’m taking an extra class?

URich is right. I find it slightly ridiculous that your first priority is making sure your life for the next few months looks good to admissions officers and not to your family… I would be really offended if my child wanted to get a part-time job to help support me in a state of unemployment just so he could get into a better school.

epercival: I wasn’t trying to act self-centered. I am just trying to get into Berkeley; I am already footing a bunch of family bills myself from my savings account.
