What looks better?

If all things are equal, does it look better for colleges to invest all your time in one activity and be really, really good at it (such as national recognition and tons of awards and honors) or to spread out your time and just be decent at many things and have a wide range of EC’s?

(Just a debate I’ve had with my mom about my EC’s.)

Those are two extremes. I don’t think investing all of your time in ONE activity is going to look very good for colleges, but neither is being a member of 50 clubs and holding a cabinet position for a few of them. The perfect recipe from what I’ve heard and seen is being super involved in a few extracurriculars. For example, being Varsity captain of a sports team, as well as President of a school organization, as well as holding a high position or rank in an out of school club or organization is sort of what you want to aim for. Of course you can go further than that; I don’t think colleges will discriminate against you if you’re very involved with numerous extra curriculars, just as long as you show passion and substantial time devoted to each one. To answer your question in simplest terms, I don’t think either are what you should aim for, but having two or three extracurriculars that you are very involved with looks better than being a foot deep in millions of EC’s.
