What made you choose Dartmouth?

Given the large amount of amazing colleges/universities in the country, what was it about Dartmouth that led you to decide to go there?

I spent the entire month of April agonizing over the really polarizing choice between Dartmouth and Berkeley. I would literally wake up every day with a different decision in mind. I analyzed tons of stats, talked to a ton of people and read all kinds of things about both schools, but ultimately, visiting the schools did it for me. Berkeley seemed really cool and like a real happening place, but the student body was really disconnected and there was a prevalance of “nerd” culture espeically in the freshman class. Maybe (probably) because Berkeley is such a tough school, i felt like there was less fun there because people were forced to work hard. At Dartmouth, all I had to do was to spend a night there to know it was for me. Honestly, I’m a big city kind of guy and I loved Berkeley and was totally terrified by Hanover. I’m also not white, which is kind of intimidating on the Dartmouth campus and not at all on the Berkeley campus (where being white is probably the more intimidating thing). Even with pretty much all the chips stacked against Dartmouth, when I saw how close the student body was and what a fun school Dartmouth is, I overcame all of that and decided to go. I’m personally very happy with my choice.

two things:
1.) one of the best language departments in the country (and I didn’t apply to Middlebury, so definitely the best one I was considering)
2.) During Dimensions, I sat in on an 80 person lecture class, and the professor called on everyone by name - that made a big impression on me.
3.)its pretty  ok, this wasn’t one of my top criteria, but I did visit some pretty ugly schools, and knew I couldn’t live there for four years.

Okay so I’m in the 1902 room right now working on my final paper (been in here all day). For those who don’t know, the 1902 room is a big room in the library where people come to study together in an atmosphere of silent anxiety. So 5 minutes ago three guys walk in with an old school boombox blaring and hand out candy and red bull to everyone studying. They were wearing sunglasses and one guy was in a bee suit. Yeah and its 1:10 in the morning. Random unexpected study breaks = bliss. THIS is why I love Dartmouth.

hahahahaha that makes me so happy… i can’t wait for september

Its one of the most unique college experiences in the country. Awesome social life, beautiful nature, LACish focus with amazing professors, sophomore summer, study abroad, the “tightness” of the community, top 7 grad placement, incredibly strong alumni network all added to convince me it was the best college experience out there for me.
