What major does animation fall under?

Basically like drawing cartoons and animating them. Examples are like the Simpsons (2-D) and Toy Story (3-D).

Birdkiller, it depends on the school. Some schools have majors in animation ( Calarts, Ringling, SVA etc.) Some schools such as RISD, RIT, USC etc. have animation courses found in their Film and Video department. Other schools such as University of Cincinnati have two approaches: animation is found in their fine arts department. In addition, they offer a specific major in Digital Design, which includes animation but is more broad based. It is not just animation specific because it includes courses in web design, special effects and digital photography and programming. There really are a lot of approaches to this major.

One point that you should keep in mind is that geting a job in animation is tough! Many kids want this especially for game design. You maybe better off geting a broader range of courses, which will open up more opportunites for you. You could always then go on with a masters degree or continuing education in animation. There are animation specific vocational types of programs such as the Gnomon School of Visual Effects. See [Gnomon School of Visual Effects](http://www.gnomon3d.com/programs/profstudies/profstudies.asp)
