Greetings all, I have a quick question. I love love love to write, read, analyze, interpret, and journal.
Favorite authors include Emerson, Thoreau, London, Tolstoy, and Kerouac.

I often wonder, what major fits this description? I have yet to find an answer.

Some majors that come to mind - journalism, english, philosophy (little practical application)?

Can anyone tell me what might be the best major for me?

Note that I am foremost a math major. But I’ve been pretty keenly interested in literature, and many friends are into the majors you mentioned.

I think you might consider that if you’re so passionate about these things, you may be a good candidate to hope for an academic position eventually, where you’ll basically study such things and become a critic. In which case, it is important to find a niche, according to a friend who seems to be doing great things with her major. By a “niche” I mean to say some specific focus within literature. She herself is doing something with Slavic Literature and even learning some Russian to go along with it - doing several things to try to become an expert at some unique stuff that interests her. I think a great way to take a unique academic path is to experiment by merging disciplines like English and philosophy, and finding what you like in each.

Judging by your words, I think you’d best enjoy English + philosophy. You mentioned both Slavic and American authors, and I’m sure you’d have a chance at looking at both with English + philosophy, though I’d be sure “English” means “literature” – not British English, if you know what I mean. Else, perhaps form your own path studying American and Slavic Lit.
