So I know that Princeton is generally good in every discipline but I wondered if any of those actually stand out. I know that sciences and Woodrow Wilson School are famous, but I’m interested in social sciences, for example, economics, politics, the status of which I haven’t heard much about. I’m also interested in the quality of computer science major here. I haven’t done much coding at school but I’m still interested in trying out computer science here. Who knows? Maybe I might actually like it. Besides, I’m a freshman so I believe that I have time to explore. Anyways, hope you guys can help me.
Princeton has an excellent computer science department and you can go either the AB or BSE route. From what I understand the courses are taught at a very fast pace so having a coding background is very helpful, even for the introductory courses.
princeton’s computer science department is pretty small and has quite a few weaknesses. some of its strong points are theory and visual stuffs, but they lack depth in other areas.
and the pace of the intro courses i think is not “very fast” but more like “appropriate” for an intro course. they do make sure you learn a lot (if you didn’t know the material already) and present it well.
i think princeton has a really strong french literature major. better than most universities in canada actually.
You should be sampling classes now. Speaking with your classmates now. Engage the people around you. Make sure that your schedule isn’t simply an extension of your 12th grade year.
Stop focusing on how outsiders view the major – * you’re already in freaking Princeton!*. Why don’t you relax and stop worrying about know-nothing outsiders and how you stand “among other top tier schools”.
One part of your maturation process should be the realization that you can step off the rat race treadmill.
Just about all of Princeton’s departments are outstanding, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. The History, Economics, Politics and Sociology departments are all incredible. Honestly, Woody Woo really just has the name and isn’t actually that great of a department on campus compared to others. Because it is so interdisciplinary, there isn’t a lot of structure to the department and they’ve been reevaluating it so it’s kind of a shit show right now. A lot of people declare Woody Woo because they don’t know what else they want to study and because they can cover a wide range of things with that as a major.
