What makes a good college?

After having been to a supposedly top ranked college, I am skeptical of the US news rankings and tend to think the rankings are more based off of politics than anything objective. I’m at an unranked college and I think it is at least 3 times as good as my old school.

What makes a school “good” in your opinion? (This kind of goes back to the question why do we go to college)

Job/network opportunities, academic rigor, reputed professors, social/growth opportunities, location, cost, other?

Having professors that really teach you stuff, offering degrees that get you a good job, and a place where you’ll want to live for 4 years.

The USNWR rankings are mostly nonsense. They change the criteria/formula every year just to shake up the rankings and make a story. Outside of the top 20 or so, you could probably place your school +/- 25 spots on that list and it wouldn’t make much of a difference. This year, they decided to make graduation rate much more important, so public schools in general took a huge hit (notably, Wisconsin) despite other qualities which make them great choices. This especially hurts schools that have been improving really well over the past decade or so, again, like Wisconsin, the smaller UC’s, and Ohio State.

The college/university would have to be one that could adequately educate me, while fostering a positive environment.

So somewhere in England?

I like my colleges like I like my clunkers: they get the driver from point A to point B without breaking the bank.
